Arcanaut Studios unveiled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player action RPG, during The Game Awards 2025, on Dec 11, 2025. Arcanaut Studios, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, is developing the game.
Casey Hudson, the director of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) and BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy, is helming the project as the director of Arcanaut. Hudson’s involvement marks a strategic move by Lucasfilm Games to re-anchor its portfolio around strong narrative identities.
The game is described as a story-first, choice-driven RPG, set during the final phase of the Old Republic era. The reveal trailer offers only atmospheric glimpses, but it emphasizes Force-centered conflict and character-driven storytelling, rather than multiplayer or service-based mechanics. An official statement suggests it is a blend of “innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat.”
Creative Vision and Gameplay Direction
Hudson positions the title as a modern reconstruction of the classic Old Republic ethos, branching choices, alignment-shifting decisions, and cinematic storytelling that adapts to player actions. He emphasized, "Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience.”
The gameplay offers an action-RPG with narrative progression at its core, suggesting hybrid combat systems and flexible character builds. This direction places the project closer to contemporary narrative-RPG benchmarks such as Jedi: Fallen Order and Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
While the gameplay details are limited, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, Douglas Reilly, noted his excitement, stating, “fans will be delighted by the journey that awaits them.” Game director, Hudson, said the project leverages current technology and designs to deliver immersive player agency and world-building that echo the tone that made KOTOR influential.
The game is still in the early development stage. Key production details, such as the release window and the combat system, remain unconfirmed. Variety reported that it is planned for a cross-platform launch on both PC and consoles.
In his final statement, Hudson mentioned that with KOTOR, they “were just focused on making the best game,” which resulted in a lasting impact on fans and players, teasing that Fate of the Old Republic might become the next hit in the Star Wars universe.
