Highlights

  • Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over 10.36M units globally within just four months from its launch in June 2025.
  • Nintendo has also increases hardware forecast to 19M units and software forecast to 48M units for FY2026, reflecting strong market demand and hybrid console success.
  • Switch 2 drove 132% YoY net sales growth during Q1, while helping Nintendo’s video game platform sales surge by 119.7% in Q2.

The Japanese video game publisher and developer, Nintendo Co., Ltd., has achieved a new milestone with its Switch gaming consoles. The Nintendo Switch 2, published in June 2025, has recorded sales of over 10.36M units globally, within four months of its release.

After a well-established legacy from the original Switch, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. As of June 30, 2025, the Switch 2 has shipped 5.82M hardware units and 8.67M software units, according to Nintendo's figures. In contrast, the original Switch, launched in March 2017, had sold 1.89M units during this timeframe.

The company has responded to this early demand by raising its hardware forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2026 from 15M to 19M units, and its software target from 45M to 48M units. On the other hand, the company has strategically lowered its projections for Switch from 4.5M to 4M, keeping its sales figures in mind.

Switch 2 Sales Impact on Nintendo’s Overall Earnings

The Switch 2’s strong uptake has quickly translated into tangible financial impact. The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 boosted hardware sales throughout the half-year timeframe, even though sales dropped for the Nintendo Switch. The fact that Nintendo Switch 2 has a higher unit price than Nintendo Switch helped to boost net sales. Nintendo’s video game platform business sales climbed by 119.7% year on year.

For the first quarter of the 2026 Fiscal Year, Nintendo reported that Nintendo Switch 2, which has a lower profit margin than Nintendo Switch, accounted for a higher proportion of the hardware sales. The Switch 2 sales drove net sales of ¥572.3B (approx. $3.8B) in that period, with a 132% YoY increase. Due to the large growth in Nintendo Switch 2’s net sales, the operating profit also observed a 4.4% year-on-year increase in this period.

During the second quarter, Nintendo again attributed Switch 2 as the driving force, with the video game platform business sales increasing by 119.7% year-on-year. The high demand following the launch of Switch 2 during the first quarter decreased; however, performance remained strong with sales of 4.54M units during the second quarter. Along with the strong performance in hardware sales, Switch 2 also observed 20.62B units in software sales.

Switch 2’s strong performance strengthens Nintendo’s hardware pipeline, while underscoring that the hybrid console model remains viable in the current gaming market. While Nintendo does not yet break out full product-line margins for the new console, the increased forecast of 19 million units suggests Nintendo anticipates that the Switch 2 will meaningfully contribute to fiscal 2026 profit and hardware margin recovery.
