Tamil Nadu Minister Unveils Vision to Boost State’s Gaming Sector
Highlights
Minister for Industries in Tamil Nadu, T R B Rajaa, recently highlighted how Tamil Nadu can “truly unlock” the gaming sector’s potential.
The “Tamil Nadu Gaming Sector Dialogue” discussed sharper policies, industry partnerships, skill development, esports promotion, and global collaborations to unlock the state’s potential.
With strong IT infrastructure, creative talent, and startup presence, Tamil Nadu aims for responsible and quick growth in the sector.
Dr. T R B Rajaa, Minister for Industries in Tamil Nadu and an organizer within the DMK party, recently underscored his state’s ambitions in the gaming sector at the "Tamil Nadu Gaming Sector Dialogue" hosted by Guidance Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that the global gaming industry now surpasses cinema, music, and books combined in market size, and stressed that Tamil Nadu’s skilled workforce has long been at the heart of this sector's global success.
In a recent post on X, Dr. Rajaa emphasized Tamil Nadu's strengths like its talent pool, robust IT infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem, which position the state to become a leader in the gaming industry, according to him.
According to him, the Gaming Sector Dialogue event focused on actionable ways to unlock the state's potential, including formulating clearer policies, deepening industry collaboration, enhancing skill development, promoting esports, and seeking international partnerships.
These efforts come at a time of intense growth for India’s gaming sector. The country’s gaming market is projected to surge to $9.2billion by 2029, with over 591 million active gamers nationwide as of 2024. Tamil Nadu, known for its technical education hubs and IT parks, continues to be a key contributor to this growth. With a year-on-year increase of 7% in India’s gamer base to 488 million in 2024, the sector is attracting startups and global players eager to tap local talent and growing digital demand.
However, the state’s ambition is accompanied by a push for responsible growth. In 2025, Tamil Nadu’s government enacted new regulations for the Real Money Gaming (RMG) segment, mandating robust player protections: age verification, spending limits, pop-up warnings on addictive play, and mandatory “blank hours” from midnight to 5AM to curb excessive gaming. These measures reflect mounting concerns about online gaming addiction and its potential effects on youth and mental health.
Dr. Rajaa acknowledged the importance of balancing opportunity with safeguards, working under the guidance of the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. He expressed optimism that Tamil Nadu, by combining policy innovation and its world-class human capital, can set new benchmarks for inclusive, responsible growth in the global gaming industry.
Industry stakeholders remain eager for “exciting announcements” hinted at by Dr. Rajaa, as Tamil Nadu aims to translate its creative and technological prowess into sustainable leadership in gaming.
