Toei Animation, known for global anime hits like Dragon Ball and One Piece, has announced a sweeping 10-year international expansion plan that places India as a primary focus, alongside regions like North America, China, and Europe. The studio is aiming to transform overseas anime production into a major pillar of its business by opening two to three new studios in Asia over the next five years, and heavily investing in local content creation.

India at the Heart of Toei’s Global Ambitions

The strategic map for Toei’s expansion includes a planned presence in India, where it intends to develop anime projects that integrate regional cultures and collaborate with local artists.

This initiative follows the plans of opening of a sales office in Italy in 2023, with India and South America as the next targets. Toei Animation executives have emphasized India's significance as a rapidly growing entertainment market and a critical part of their international growth strategy.

Toei Animation plans to invest approximately 20 billion yen (approximately $130 million) over five years, specifically to grow overseas anime IP creation, targeting 25 new titles produced globally, including in India. The company also intends to employ hundreds of new staff at its main Oizumi Studio in Japan, and expand technology-driven visual storytelling with advances in VR, AR, XR, AI, motion capture, and gaming assets.

With another 19 billion yen earmarked for logistics, e-commerce, stores, and events, Toei is building a comprehensive ecosystem to support its international ambitions.

Riding the Wave of Anime Popularity in India

Toei’s focus on India aligns with the country’s booming interest in anime, highlighted by strong box office performances of recent hits like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. By establishing a studio hub and developing culturally resonant content, Toei Animation aims to deepen its market footprint and foster local talent, supporting the broader growth of anime fandom and production in India.
