  • Crystal Dynamics says all AI-assisted assets were replaced or refined by developers.
  • The remake launches Feb 12, 2027, as AI use in game development remains under debate.

Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog have confirmed that artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted tools were used during the development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the upcoming remake of Lara Croft's original 1996 adventure. The disclosure appeared on the game's Steam page following its latest showcase during PlayStation's State of Play June 2026 presentation and comes as AI use in game development remains under industry scrutiny.

According to the Steam listing, AI-assisted tools were used to support "some early exploration and temporary development content." The disclosure states that any assets created with AI assistance were either replaced or refined by developers to ensure the final product aligned with the creative and artistic vision of the team.

The clarification followed discussion surrounding the game's newly released trailer and promotional materials.

One image appeared to show Lara Croft dual-wielding pistols while two additional pistols remained holstered, prompting speculation online about whether AI-generated content had been involved. However, no evidence has linked the image to the studio's disclosed use of AI, and other official screenshots show Lara carrying two pistols with empty holsters.

Crystal Dynamics Says Final Content Remains Human-Crafted

In a statement provided to Eurogamer, Crystal Dynamics stated that it uses AI tools to help teams iterate on ideas more efficiently while ensuring all finished content is created by developers. "At Crystal Dynamics, we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted," a company spokesperson disclosed.

The disclosure places Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis among a growing number of major games publicly acknowledging AI-assisted development. Recent projects such as Crimson Desert have carried similar notices, reflecting broader industry efforts to improve production efficiency as development costs continue to rise.

At the same time, AI remains a divisive topic across the games business. Critics argue the technology could affect creative roles and artistic ownership, while supporters view it as a tool that can streamline production without replacing developers.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will launch on Feb 12, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Published by Amazon Game Studios and developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the remake will be followed later in 2027 by the new franchise entry, Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
