Valve Fixes Steam Local Network Game Transfer Issue

Valve fixed Steam's local network game transfers on July 27, 2026, through a new stable Steam client update. The patch resolves a recent issue that caused some game installs to download files from the internet instead of transferring them over a local network.

The fix restores one of Steam's bandwidth-saving features. It allows users to copy installed games and updates between gaming laptops, PCs, and Steam Deck devices without downloading the same files multiple times. Valve also recommends updating every participating device, as transfers may not work correctly if different Steam Client versions are installed.

Steam Local Network Game Transfers Work Across PCs and Steam Deck

Before downloading or updating a game, Steam checks whether another Steam client on the same local area network (LAN) already has the required files. If one is available, Steam transfers the content directly over the local network. If the transfer is interrupted or incomplete, Steam automatically downloads the remaining files from its content servers.

The feature works only if both devices are online, connected to the same local network, and have local network game transfers enabled.

Users can allow transfers only between their own devices, Steam friends, or any Steam user on the LAN. The sending device must also be idle, while the game must be publicly released and fully updated. However, Valve verifies every transferred file before installation. Save files, Steam Cloud data, Workshop content, and configuration files are not transferred.

PC users can install the update through Steam > Check for Steam Client Updates. On Steam Deck, updates are available under Settings > System > Updates, where pending software updates are marked with a yellow notification.

The update restores a feature built for homes with multiple Steam devices. It helps reduce repeated downloads, lowers bandwidth usage, and speeds up game installations, especially for large titles.
