Steam’s New Update Could Raise Video Game Prices in India

The latest Steam pricing update might raise video game prices in India for PC players.

Highlights

  • Steam’s new developer monetization tools help devs set fairer prices for lower-income countries.
  • This Steam pricing update could stabilize costs for Indian gamers or raise them depending on developer choices.
  • If the Indian rupee keeps fluctuating, it could drive up game prices heavily.

In a recent Steam pricing update, Valve introduced three methods to help developers price games across 37 currencies. This helps developers adapt to global market conditions using three Steam-recommended methods. They can use exchange rates, purchasing power parity, and a combination of both.

For Indian gamers who benefit from regional pricing to account for lower average incomes, these changes could mean more consistent prices. However, with the Indian rupee fluctuating against the USD, there's a risk that games become even more expensive if developers lean towards exchange rate-based pricing.

Regional pricing is already becoming rare, and many games are priced close to Western markets. Here is a detailed breakdown of how the new conversion methods work on Steam and what it means for Indian gamers.

Understanding Steam’s New Pricing Conversion Methods

Steam now offers three conversion methods plus market data for 37 currencies and four region groups. Developers can still set prices manually, but these tools provide smarter starting points.

  • Exchange Rate Conversion: This method simply converts game prices from United States Dollars (USD) to regional currencies. If developers choose this method, it leads to game prices being the most expensive for Indian gamers.
  • Purchasing Power Conversion: Uses public data on average customer purchasing power in each country or region. It is essentially regional pricing based on new purchasing power data.
  • Multi-variable Conversion: This is Steam’s newest pricing method. It accounts for several things, like purchasing power, local entertainment costs, and exchange rates.

Steam has posted an interactive tool on Steamworks that lets developers preview how each method converts major USD price points into INR and other currencies. There will be no automatic price changes to existing games. However, it could affect how future games are priced.

It is completely up to publishers to decide when and how to apply the new prices. They can set any price they want for a market and ignore Steam’s pricing methods if they want. In recent years, smaller studios have priced games based on regional pricing recommendations in India, while larger studios have priced their games closer to global markets.

Will Video Game Prices Rise in India?

India falls into Steam’s South Asia regional pricing group. Historically, Valve’s recommendations already discounted games heavily, compared to US prices, to match local incomes. The new Purchasing Power and Multivariable methods are likely to keep suggested INR prices more affordable.

This benefits India’s large Steam user base by encouraging developers to maintain accessible pricing for gamers. However, if publishers ignore the purchasing power method and default to exchange-rate or manual pricing, popular titles could become more expensive. Price hikes also trigger a 30-day discount cooldown across all regions. It means that gamers who wait for sales may have to wait longer to get better prices on games.

The Indian rupee has been volatile lately. Its exchange rate against USD has touched the INR 95 mark recently. If the currency keeps depreciating, developers who apply the direct currency conversion method will effectively raise prices for Indian gamers.

Steam’s Purchasing Power Conversion method seeks to act as a buffer to prevent such price increases. However, it is completely up to developers to choose how they want to adopt pricing in the market. With the currency being unstable and regional pricing becoming less common in India, gaming as a hobby is likely to become more expensive for Indian PC gamers.

Indian Gamers Can Affect How Publishers Treat the Market

Publishers face no obligation to change anything today. When they do update prices, the new conversion dashboard will be available in Steamworks. Gamers can speak up and communicate with publishers. There are examples of studios reducing the prices of popular games after gaming communities spoke out.

Embark Studios reduced the price of Arc Raiders in India during the game’s preorder window. It was priced at INR 3,449, and the studio brought it down to INR 2,467 quickly after players complained about the game’s pricing in the country. Control saw a similar decrease, but it took longer for the developers to implement. The game was priced at INR 3K, and it dropped to INR 1.5K permanently in April 2025.

Overall, the Steam pricing update gives developers better data and more tools to price games better. Indian gamers might benefit from the new methods or face gradual price increases if currency fluctuations continue. The coming months will show which direction each publisher takes when pricing for the Indian market.
