Highlights

  • A sold-out album version of BTS ARIRANG reveals just how fast India's K-pop audience is growing.
  • The trade route taken by BTS' latest album to enter India potentially says as much about operational realities as it does about fandom demand.
  • What looks like a mere retail launch is unveiling bigger gaps in how India handles niche entertainment merchandise, like K-pop.

Shoppers Stop is selling two official versions of BTS’ fifth studio album ARIRANG, both online as well as in its physical retail stores, making fans rush to the outlets to experience their first dedicated K-pop installation in the country. However, in spite of a huge consumer demand, the inventory is limited, and fans are waiting for restock, amidst a complex situation concerning trade routes, compliance hurdles, and retail infrastructure issues that need an upgrade.

To get a broader idea regarding this Shoppers Stop BTS ARIRANG Pop-ups, Outlook Respawn reached South City Mall in Kolkata (West Bengal, India). Interestingly, in 2025, global asset manager Blackstone acquired South City Projects, the mall’s holding company, thereby taking over the South City Mall itself and its Colombo project in a ₹3,250 crore INR (~$342.37M USD) deal.

BTS ARIRANG Album Demands Outpace Supply

When Outlook Respawn reached the pop-up, the reality on the ground was a bit harsh. It showcased that although appetite for the album drop is massive, the inventory is strictly finite. Notably, the pop-up depicted the rapid sell out of the premium Living Legend versions of ARIRANG, which were retailing for ₹2,500 (~ $26.35), inclusive of taxes. The sales executive at the pop-up counter confirmed the velocity of the launch, noting that the inventory, especially for the Living Legend Ver. vanished almost the exact moment it arrived. "The Living Legend version sold out instantly when it was first brought into the mall around June 15 or so," she said. “It was then restocked another time, which got sold out as well,” the executive added further.

However, fans still have a chance to buy ARIRANG as only a few copies of the Rooted in Music version are up for grabs. Priced at ₹2,200 (~$23.16) including taxes, the albums are moving rapidly, with stock poised to follow the already sold-out other album versions. The sales executive at the South City Mall said that this pop-up is taking place in other notable malls of Kolkata as well, like Acropolis and Forum, indicating that all malls with Shoppers Stop outlets will be able to purchase the album physically. To drive foot traffic and deepen engagement, these installations feature dedicated listening stations where visitors can experience the tracks on headphones before buying. Notably, Shoppers Stop is also a business partner in the HYBE India Audition and Pop-Up Parks and is offering similar kinds of benefits, like a listening experience at the Pop-Up Park venues.

Nevertheless, if one is not able to buy the album in person or is unable to cherish the listening experience, they can order it from the Shoppers Stop e-commerce portal. But, the Living Legend version remains out of stock there as well, yet the Rooted in Music version remains to be sold further. This signals a sharp, unsatisfied appetite for official K-pop physical media in the Indian market. The current traditional retail infrastructure of India needs to be redesigned to handle niche merchandising categories for K-pop commerce, as the country steadily becomes a booming regional market for the industry.

Understanding the Trade Route: Why ARIRANG is Coming via Japan

Shoppers Stop’s online e-commerce portal showcases a curious supply chain detour, with the ARIRANG album stock arriving via HYBE Japan Inc. instead of South Korea. This trade route suggests that regional distribution rights and import logistics for such major drops are far more complicated than a simple direct-to-market pipeline.

Governed by a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) since 2010, the India–South Korea trade relationship is under an active review as New Delhi looks to narrow down a trade deficit with Seoul, which reportedly hit nearly $15.35B in 2025–26. Trade and customs experts note that India has enhanced its origin-verification needs under its trade agreements, enabling authorities to ask for detailed proof-of-origin documentation, including bills of materials, supplier declarations, cost records, and production evidence instead of just depending solely on Certificates of Origin. These changes have become specifically significant for Korean exporters as negotiations over refining the CEPA terms continue.

In comparison, the India–Japan trade framework seems to be more institutionally stable than the India–South Korea one at present. The India–Japan CEPA, in force since 2011, is managed via regular review mechanisms, including the 7th Joint Committee Meeting held in Tokyo in March 2026.

While Indian officials have pressed for more balanced trade and wider utilization of the agreement with Japan, the trade relationship between these two countries is not being proactively reviewed like the India–South Korea CEPA. Although public evidence regarding direct comparison of customs-clearance results between Japanese and Korean consumer-goods shipments remains limited, many Instagram stores that sell K-pop merch and items in India have spoken up about delayed deliveries regarding the customs issues. With such strategic pushes, importers can benefit from a more predictable policy environment, with people gaining seamless access to products from the East Asian country without any hassle.

Growing Demand, Limited Infrastructure: A Retail Test for India's K-pop Market

Both Shoppers Stop and HYBE have not officially confirmed that the Japan route was chosen to bypass the India-Korea customs friction, but the logistical realities speak for themselves. Direct Korean imports currently face strict regulatory obstacles in India, and amidst this, leveraging HYBE's Japanese intermediary depicts a calculated measure within the practical workarounds that are needed for doing business in the region. But for now, the fans in the city of Kolkata or India in general aren't thinking about trade corridors; they are asking when the next restock arrives and are hopeful that it will be soon.
