- Gurugram is getting ready for its own Comic Con, to be held in mid-March 2026.
- Cosplay 101 proved to be a good entry point for aspiring cosplayers, looking forward to the debut Comic Con of the city.
Comic Con India is slowly growing its presence across the country. After launching in more cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, and Pune in 2025, a new city has been added to the roster, with the event also debuting in Gurugram. As a precursor to Gurugram Comic Con on March 14–15, the organization hosted a special workshop on cosplaying to mark a meaningful step forward in Gurugram’s growing cosplay ecosystem.
The workshop was led by Akshay Churi, a two-time winner of the Indian Championship of Cosplay (ICC). His recent cosplay of Doom Slayer, filled with intricate details, landed him the ICC Champion for the second time. He was also joined by Janvi Negi, a seasoned local cosplayer with over nine years of experience. While both are known for their hands-on approach to costume creation, Akshay Churi focused on creating armor/prop-heavy cosplay, and Janvi delved into the details of makeup and fabric-based cosplay creation.
Comic Con Cosplay Workshop Was About Building the Community Up
The event brought together aspiring cosplayers and fans of the event for a practical session revealing tricks of the trade. Akshay and Janvi explored everything from different concepts of cosplay to selecting the right materials and tools for any cosplayer’s first creation.
Getting started on the first project can be jarring, and the two made this easier by sharing details about their own process, how they source materials and get the finished look.
Focusing on how the community is still growing and needs to be as inviting without prejudice, Akshay Churi talked about supporting other cosplayers and the hard work that goes into creating such elaborate projects. Janvi also encouraged new cosplayers to express their versions of their favourite characters.
The workshop also explored the practicalities of the world of cosplay in India, how to begin and what all avenues the community has to offer. Showing off his Doom Slayer cosplay helmet, Akshay emphasized on how cosplaying “is first and foremost about enjoying yourself at the event and be your favourite character for some time”. Janvi also coached aspiring cosplayers about VFX makeup, details of her own elaborate costumes, how she works on different wigs and costumes, even sewing them by hand, at times.
The workshop marked a good entry point to support the growing community of cosplayers in anticipation of Gurugram’s very own first Comic Con set to take place in a few weeks. Giving everyone plenty of time to get started on their own cosplay projects.
