Crunchyroll President Maps its Next Anime Breakout Strategy
Crunchyroll President on Content Strategy and AI Stance
Rahul Purini points to Witch Hat Atelier and Daemons of the Shadow Realm as anime's global audience continues to grow.
Highlights
- Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini identified Witch Hat Atelier and Daemons of the Shadow Realm as strong contenders for the next global anime breakout.
- The company continues to focus on internationally appealing stories instead of only focusing on Japanese manga.
- Purini reaffirmed Crunchyroll’s commitment to creator-driven storytelling, stating that the platform does not use AI for dubbing, subtitling, or creative processes.
With most 2010’s hit anime franchises ending, Crunchyroll is already looking beyond Solo Leveling as it searches for the next anime capable of breakout success globally. In a Radio Times interview published this month, Rahul Purini outlined three core pillars shaping Crunchyroll’s content strategy: prioritizing audience demand, supporting creators, and identifying promising sources from international markets.
Purini highlighted its Spring 2026 slate, including Witch Hat Atelier and Daemons of the Shadow Realm, as examples of titles that could resonate with viewers worldwide. Daemons, adapted from Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa’s manga, premiered on April 4, 2026. Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier adaptation was released on the platform on April 6, 2026.
He further talked about a model built around international audience demand and a defined position on AI in localization. Pointing to the global success of Solo Leveling, Purini said Crunchyroll looks for titles with strong storytelling foundations while evaluating future projects.
Purini on Crunchyroll’s Content Strategy: Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Witch Hat Atelier and More
“Amazing animation, beautiful, beautiful characters, and (a) story that I'm really excited for,” described Purini while talking about Witch Hat Atelier. The anime has already received three nominations at the Astra TV Awards 2026, after airing only ten episodes.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm project also carries significant industry attention due to Arakawa’s track record and the manga’s growing readership since its 2021 launch.
Apart from these titles, Purini explained the platform’s sourcing philosophy for upcoming new titles. According to him, Crunchyroll aims to bring “stories outside of Japan we know our audience will resonate with.”
Solo Leveling is the most concrete proof of that model. Back in 2024, Purini clarified that Crunchyroll identified the Korean manhwa, brought it to Aniplex, and co-produced the anime.
Purini told Radio Times the creators are “actively working” on Solo Leveling’s next installment, adding that Crunchyroll hopes to “announce something soon.” Upcoming production, Ghost of Tsushima, extends the same logic into game IP. The 2027 Crunchyroll anime is a joint production among Crunchyroll, Sony Music, PlayStation Productions, and Aniplex.
Creator Autonomy Guides Crunchyroll’s AI Stance and Content Strategy
Purini told Radio Times that “Creator authenticity is really important for us. We want to make sure creators get to tell the stories the way they want to tell them.” On that basis, he also clarified that Crunchyroll does not use AI in its own subtitling, dubbing, or any other creative process.
However, Purini’s comments also suggest Crunchyroll is attempting to balance technological innovation with growing industry concerns around creative labor. “So we're looking at AI in terms of how can we help with discovery, how can we help with recommendations and personalization?” he stated.
Crunchyroll’s strategy ultimately centers on identifying stories with international potential before they become global phenomena and localizing them for a global audience. With Witch Hat Atelier, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, and production efforts such as Ghost of Tsushima on its slate, the company is betting that the next breakout hit will come from a combination of strong source material, worldwide appeal, and creator-focused execution.
