Highlights

  • KPop Demon Hunters' "Golden" became the first K-pop track to win Best Original Song.
  • Producers sparked backlash by abruptly silencing the KPop Demon Hunters team mid-acceptance.
  • The Netflix hit also secured Best Animated Feature despite the KPop Demon Hunters broadcast controversy.

Sunday night should have been nothing but a dream come true for the creators behind the Netflix animated smash hit, KPop Demon Hunters. At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, the film made history when its track Golden took home Best Original Song, marking the first time a K-pop song has ever won the award. However, the historic celebration quickly soured when the production team abruptly cut off the songwriters’ acceptance speech.

Viewers and performers reacted sharply to the jarring interruption, ultimately forcing Walt Disney Television to address the controversy and promise a thorough review of the broadcast's rigid time limits.

The painful moment unfolded right after singer EJAE, who voices the character Rumi from the film’s fictional group HUNTR/X, delivered an emotional and heartfelt thank-you focused on the importance of representation and persistence. Just as she passed the microphone to co-writer and producer Lee Yu-han, the orchestra music aggressively swelled. Within moments, the microphones were completely muted, and the spotlights dimmed.

The seven first-time Oscar winners were quickly ushered off the stage, attempting to signal the production team as they were rushed away. The sudden cutoff was so abrupt that it prompted immediate boos from the live audience inside the Dolby Theatre. The incident highlighted a persistent live-broadcast dilemma: the harsh collision of tight television runtimes with a performer's rare, career-defining minutes onstage.

Fan Backlash and a Disrespected Milestone

For many viewers, this was far more than a simple technical glitch. The win for Golden is a massive global milestone for K-pop artists, and the interrupted speech deprived underrepresented creators of a widely watched platform to reflect on that significance. Fans flooded social media with frustration, slamming the production's move as heartless and comparing it to previous ceremonies where established actors were allowed to speak at length without interruption.

Given the enormous success of KPop Demon Hunters prior to the Oscars, the slight felt especially severe. Produced by Sony Pictures and released on Netflix, the demon-fighting K-pop girl group story became the streamer’s most-watched film ever. Its soundtrack completely dominated the 2025 Billboard charts with its tracks hitting the Hot 100, and it swept the awards season with two Golden Globes, two Critics Choice Awards, and a historic Grammy win.

In the wake of the uproar, Rob Mills, Walt Disney Television’s executive vice president of unscripted and alternative entertainment, stepped forward to address the outcry. Speaking to Variety on March 16, Mills admitted that the incident is being taken seriously and that the network needs to rethink its approach.

A Triumphant Finish Off-Camera

While acknowledging that there is no single obvious answer, Mills stated the production team will conduct a post-mortem review to explore practical changes for next year’s show. The network is currently looking into a range of options, including designating a single spokesperson to ensure clarity within time limits.

Offering a backstage live feed to stream longer remarks straight to social media, and revising time allotments and cues between creative producers and the orchestra to prevent premature cutoffs. Mills framed these ideas as a search for a more respectful balance between celebrating hard-earned milestones and managing an award show’s rigid schedule.

Despite the broadcast disappointment, the Golden team eventually got their moment to shine. The songwriters were allowed to finish their remarks backstage and complete their thanks out of the live broadcast, where a grateful Lee Yu-han thanked his supporters and called the win an incredible honor.

The film's groundbreaking achievements were further cemented later that night when KPop Demon Hunters successfully took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Director Maggie Kang used her uninterrupted time at the podium to dedicate the trophy to Koreans worldwide and to the future of representation in film, ensuring the team's historic night wasn't entirely overshadowed by the broadcast blunder.
