Highlights

  • CyberAgent and Cypic are positioning the Kagurabachi anime as a major global IP strategy project.
  • The adaptation will launch with an international “World Tour,” featuring early screenings before its release in Japan.
  • Executives emphasized balancing worldwide expansion with creative fidelity, using Kagurabachi as a model.

CyberAgent and Cypic are framing Kagurabachi anime as a centerpiece of their long-term anime business strategy to compete in Japan’s rapidly globalizing animation industry. CyberAgent and Shochiku are the production partners on the Kagurabachi project, with studio Cypic handling animation.

Cypic President and CEO Nobuhiro Takenaka and CyberAgent President and CEO Takahiro Yamauchi explained the goal and vision behind the Kagurabachi anime adaptation on CyberAgent's official media page on May 11. Takenaka stated that the primary and ultimate goal is to create an anime that can be considered the best anime adaptation.

He further emphasized the involvement of industry veterans such as director Tetsuya Takeuchi and character designer Keigo Sasaki, and how the production team is slowly building Kagurabachi anime with precision and belief. Kagurabachi is releasing in Spring 2027, following a ‘World Tour’ designed to promote the anime overseas.

How Kagurabachi is Accelerating CyberAgent and Cypic’s Anime Strategy

CyberAgent is known for its gaming business through Cygames and ABEMA streaming service. After Cypic rebranded as its Media & IP business subsidiary, the company is now aiming to strengthen its anime business with original works for both domestic and international markets.

Both Takenaka and Yamauchi mentioned the global fanbase of Kagurabachi manga, which they aim to target. The Kagurabachi anime trailer crossed 6M views within a day of its release, further proving the IP’s demand across markets.

Kagurabachi anime’s distribution plan reflects how seriously CyberAgent is treating this as a global property from day one. The Kagurabachi World Tour will begin overseas before concluding in Japan, featuring exclusive screenings of the first 20 minutes of Episode 1.

The ‘world tour’ for a new anime IP is unusual; even more so given that it is not debuting in Japan. The international debut positions the Kagurabachi anime as CyberAgent’s deliberate global bet.

However, Takenaka stated, the company is not focusing on the overseas market, and is not trying to adapt to the market expectations. Yamauchi stated the Kagurabachi World Tour is a way to connect with the local communities and work closely with country-specific platforms.

However, both have emphasized the importance of protecting the creativity and originality of the anime as a way to connect with a global fandom. The gap between those two arguments is where the anime strategy falls: creative conviction for the product and corporate infrastructure for the delivery mechanism.
