Expanding its global release footprint, Mamoru Hosoda’s latest movie, Scarlet, is coming to Indian theatres on Feb 6, 2026, in IMAX format. At the time of release, it will be available with Japanese original audio and English subtitles.

Scarlet will mark the first anime movie released in India in 2026. The announcement informed that tickets for the movie will eventually be available on Indian ticketing platforms BookMyShow and PVR Cinemas across the country.

As per the release schedule, the movie will simultaneously release in India, the United States, and multiple European regions on that day. The official booking site for the Scarlet anime movie has already listed multiple US cities.

Hosoda’s highly-anticipated anime movie premiered in Venice International Film Festival on Sep 4, 2025, before its cinema debut in Japan on Nov 21, 2025. Scarlet was also screened at other prestigious film festivals, including the New York Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Narrative and Production of Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet

“I wanted to make something intense,” stated Hosoda during his interview with Animation Magazine, while discussing the themes and narrative of his new movie. He positioned Scarlet as a “revenge story,” which depicts young people’s struggles in everyday life and makes them reflect on their lives.

Scarlet is a retake on Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. The original drama centers around Prince Hamlet’s revenge on his uncle who killed his father and usurped the throne. In Scarlet, Hosoda introduces princess Scarlet as the protagonist of the movie, with the narrative also revolving around her journey to avenge her father’s death.

The main difference in both narratives lies in the journey of the respective protagonists. While Hamlet becomes obsessed with revenge, Scarlet’s journey is more focused on self exploration and growth. According to Hosoda, “the characters have to endure a hard journey,” it becomes relatable through the depiction of familiar themes.

Hosoda has directed and written the Scarlet movie under Studio Chizu’s production. The movie’s blend of 2D-animation with 3D CGI is described by Hosoda as an evolving step for new animation techniques.

Japanese actors Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada voice the central characters Scarlet and Hijiri, respectively. Other notable cast members include Koji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto, and Masachika Ichimura.

The expanded international rollout that started with select theaters in the US in December 2025 shows the mainstream appeal of niche anime movies. Despite being directed by Hosoda, known for his work Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Belle, the movie had a modest theatrical run in Japan and the US, with Scarlet’s total box-office revenue barely crossing $1.4 million USD.
