PC Industry Turns to CXMT as DRAM Supply Crisis Persists

Global memory shortage opens the door for CXMT DDR5.

13 JUL 2026, 01:02 PM

Highlights

  • MSI and Asus expand CXMT DDR5 support, with speeds reaching up to DDR5-8200.
  • Corsair, Lexar, and other PC brands increasingly adopt CXMT memory amid the DRAM shortage.
  • CXMT's global DRAM capacity is projected to grow from 11% to 15% by 2028.

Chinese DRAM maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is gaining wider acceptance in the PC industry as motherboard vendors and memory brands expand support for its DDR5 chips. The move comes as the global memory shortage continues, pushing manufacturers to look beyond traditional suppliers.

MSI has released a test BIOS for AMD motherboards that increases CXMT DDR5 support from around DDR5-6800 to as high as DDR5-8200. Asus has followed up with BIOS version 1686 for AM5 motherboards. The update is available globally and supports speeds up to DDR5-8200.

Asus also demonstrated a KingBank DDR5-6000 kit overclocked to DDR5-8400.

CXMT Becomes a Stronger Option for Consumer PCs

MSI reported that its latest AGESA-based tuning improves compatibility across multiple motherboard designs. Dual-DIMM boards with CXMT 24Gbit chips reached DDR5-8200 after passing MemTest with more than 100% coverage. Modules using CXMT 16Gbit chips reached DDR5-8000, while four-DIMM motherboards were validated at speeds up to DDR5-7200.

However, MSI tested retail memory kits from KingBank and Lexar, with more BIOS releases planned for additional boards.

The wider memory ecosystem is also shifting. Corsair has started shipping China-exclusive Vengeance DDR5 kits using CXMT DRAM. Lexar is preparing Thor DDR5-7600 CL38 and DDR5-7200 CL38 memory kits. Hardware Unboxed also found that KingBank's CXMT-based DDR5-6000 memory performed reliably and could be overclocked to 8000 MT/s.

The changes come as SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron continue prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) and data center memory production. Industry capacity expansions are not expected to ease supply constraints until at least 2028.

According to the Financial Times, CXMT accounted for 11% of global DRAM wafer capacity last year. That share is projected to reach 15% by 2028. The company also reported a first-quarter (Q1) 2026 net profit of CN¥33 billion (~$5B USD), up 719% year-over-year (YoY).

CXMT's growth has also brought increased scrutiny. Former Samsung researcher Jeon was recently sentenced to seven years in prison for leaking core DRAM technology to CXMT. The Pentagon has also blacklisted CXMT over alleged links to China's military.

Even so, growing support from motherboard makers and memory brands is strengthening CXMT's position in the consumer PC market.
