Riot Games is reportedly undertaking a massive transformation of its flagship MOBA, League of Legends, aiming to modernize the 2009 title for a new generation of players. According to a recent Bloomberg report and subsequent confirmation from Riot executives, the project is internally codenamed "League Next" and represents the biggest update in the game’s history. While this upcoming update will be a fundamental remake of the existing game rather than a standalone game, it is designed to future-proof the title, with a potential release targeted for 2027.
The overhaul promises to completely reimagine the game’s visual identity, including updated character models, user interfaces, and battle arenas. Beyond aesthetics, a significant technical shift is underway to rework the game’s underlying architecture, which should facilitate smoother future updates.
A primary goal of "League Next" is accessibility. The update will reportedly include a complete rework of the "new player experience" to lower the barrier of entry for younger gamers. As part of this effort to welcome newbies, Riot recently added new keyboard controls that may prove easier for players unfamiliar with traditional MOBA mechanics.
Following the Bloomberg report, League of Legends executive producer Paul Bellezza confirmed in a video that once the overhaul is done, it should be the "best time ever to get your friends into League."

Financial Dynamics and Internal Restructuring
The decision to refresh the industry titan comes amidst shifting financial dynamics at Riot Games. While League of Legends retains a massive audience of over 100 million monthly players, its player base has dropped off, and its revenue dominance is being challenged. As reported by Valorant, Riot’s tactical shooter generates more revenue than the league.
Coinciding with these changes, an internal reorganization of employees has been announced, following a strategic pivot last year where CEO Dylan Jadeja cut 530 jobs to sharpen the company's focus, stating at the time that Riot had "too many things underway."
Despite the need for modernization, League of Legends remains a global powerhouse. Originally released in 2009 and inspired by the Warcraft 3 mod "Defense of the Ancients," the free-to-play game is owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. and earns money by selling digital accessories.
Riot has previously attempted to diversify its business with a $250 million investment in the hit Netflix series Arcane, set in the League universe. The game’s competitive scene also remains robust, with the 2025 World Championship finals in China reportedly attracting 6.7 million virtual viewers.
As fans await the massive 2027 overhaul, the studio is expected to share more specific details on how it plans to keep the game relevant for decades to come.
