Sony Reportedly Planning PlayStation 5 Price Hike in India

11 AUG 2025, 01:36 PM
  • Sony may raise PS5 prices in India by up to 9% due to inflation and currency volatility.
  • PS5 Digital Edition could increase to INR 49,990; Disc Edition may rise to INR 58,990.
  • No official confirmation yet, but industry reports suggest changes could take effect in July.

Sony is weighing price increases of up to 9% for its PlayStation 5 gaming consoles in India as early as July, according to industry reports, as the Japanese electronics giant grapples with persistent inflationary pressures and currency volatility.

The potential increases would raise the PS5 Digital Edition's price to 49,990 rupees ($593) from 44,990 rupees ($534), while the standard Disc Edition would climb to 58,990 rupees ($699) from 54,990 rupees ($652). Sony has not officially confirmed the pricing changes.

The move would mark the second significant price adjustment for PlayStation 5 in India's gaming market. Sony previously raised console prices in 2022, citing global inflation and currency fluctuations, before temporarily reducing them to original launch levels in 2023. The Digital Edition initially debuted at 39,990 rupees ($474) in 2020.

Sony introduced PS5 Slim models in India in April 2024 at the same price points as the original consoles. It remains unclear whether the reported price adjustments would affect the newer Slim editions.

Sony's pricing strategy reflects broader economic challenges facing multinational technology companies globally. In April, Sony Interactive Entertainment implemented similar price increases across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Europe.

"With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price of the PlayStation 5," the company said in its April announcement.

The potential increases present additional challenges for Sony's market penetration in India, where console gaming remains a niche luxury in a predominantly mobile-gaming market. The company has yet to launch its premium PlayStation 5 Pro model in India, though the device is available through gray-market retailers.

Sony typically offers promotional discounts during Indian national holidays, which could partially offset the impact of higher base prices for consumers. The company is expected to make an official pricing announcement closer to the implementation date.

The PlayStation 5 has faced ongoing supply chain challenges and regional pricing variations since its 2020 global launch, as Sony balances manufacturing costs, currency fluctuations, and local market conditions across its international operations.
