Microsoft skipped this week's XBOX Insider console update and hinted that the next one is worth the delay, reviving speculation that its long-rumored disc-to-digital program is close to a public test.
Brad Rossetti, who leads the XBOX Insider Program, told testers on X that flighting was paused this week as the team preps for "week next," adding, "The wait is worth the wait, I promise." The skipped build stood out because XBOX chief executive Asha Sharma had recently committed to console updates every two weeks.
Jez Corden, the Windows Central executive editor who has reported repeatedly on the feature, quote-posted Rossetti with two words: "Positron commeth." In replies, he said he does believe the update is the disc-to-digital release.
What Positron is said to do
Corden first reported the Positron codename on May 13, 2026, after references to "Disc2Digital" surfaced in XBOX code. Subsequent reports describe a system that grants a digital entitlement once a user inserts and installs a compatible disc while signed in to a Microsoft account. XBOX One and XBOX Series X discs are covered; original Xbox and XBOX 360 discs reportedly are not. The entitlement stays tied to the disc, so selling or lending it passes digital access to the next account that uses it. No retailer visit or intermediary step is required, and converted games carry XBOX Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere access.
Because Rossetti's message was aimed at Insiders, any rollout would begin there rather than with all users.
The Sony backdrop
Sony announced on July 1 that it will end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, with new titles sold digitally or as a box containing only a download code. Analysts read that as a signal the PlayStation 6 will ship without a disc drive.
Microsoft's position is less settled. Reports say the company has not made a final call on Project Helix, its next-generation XBOX, and is weighing an all-digital approach. One scenario under discussion has players connecting an external USB Blu-ray drive to verify ownership before a license is issued.
The ownership fight
The Don't Kill the Disc petition, started by Jade Pearce of Canadian retailer PNP Games on the day of Sony's announcement, passed 250,000 verified signatures on July 9 and has since climbed past 279,000. Sony has not responded, and its PlayStation account on X went quiet for days after July 1.
PlayStation Plus subscribers who tried to cancel have reported being offered up to 50% off three months of PS Plus Extra, with 25% and 33% offers on 12-month plans. Sony has not announced a retention campaign tied to the disc decision, and it is unclear whether the offers are global, account-targeted or part of an existing cancellation flow.
Microsoft has not confirmed that Positron is what Insiders will get. On July 10, the same day as Rossetti's post, XBOX Wire published its weekly "Next Week on XBOX" roundup for July 13 to 17, covering Ascend to ZERO, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, Moss: The Forgotten Relic and Fogpiercer. That roundup is the regular release calendar, separate from whatever the Insider build contains.
