Highlights

  • TOKYO ANIME NEXT will take place in Ikebukuro in October-November 2026.
  • Organized by AJA and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the event will showcase domestic and international animated films.
  • The initiative strengthens Ikebukuro’s anime hub status and supports Japan’s broader animation globalization efforts.

The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) has announced TOKYO ANIME NEXT, a new large-scale anime event scheduled for Oct 30 - Nov 2, 2026. The four-day gathering in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district will serve as a prelude to a new annual animation festival, planned to launch in 2027, as per the announcement.

The event is designed to celebrate the growth of animation from across the world. It will bring the best animated “features and short films from around the world” for screenings in Japan.

TOKYO ANIME NEXT is a collaborative effort between AJA and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Toshima City will act as a special sponsor, with Sony Music Solutions Inc. handling the administrative operations.

TOKYO ANIME NEXT Overview: Event Details Remain Limited

TOKYO ANIME NEXT is designed as a one-off program, and will be hosted at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall and surrounding venues that are yet to be announced. However, the final day of programming, on Nov 2, is fixed at Tatemono Brillia Hall.

The grand finale will feature an orchestral performance with cinematic visuals. The final day of programming is designed to “symbolically showcase the present and future of animation.”

Organizers have also confirmed that the finale will be used to unveil the vision and framework for the new annual animation festival scheduled to begin in 2027. Additionally, AJA is actively seeking international animation submissions for screenings, likely to consider co-production measures.

While organizers have confirmed the dates, location, and overall concept, much of the program details have yet to be revealed. Application procedures, ticket pricing, guest lineups, and the full program have not been released as of writing.

The new anime festival launch aligns with AJA’s wider efforts to strengthen Japan’s animation ecosystem through industry outreach and globalization efforts. In Ikebukuro, AJA has hosted the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) since 2014. TAAF, an international animation film competition, observed its 13th edition in March.

AJA and the organization committee have yet to notify whether the announced 2027 festival is related to TAAF. Nonetheless, TAAF functions as a curated competition centered on critical recognition, whereas the ANIME NEXT event seems to have broader public and media-facing ambitions.

The TOKYO ANIME NEXT event will further solidify Ikebukuro’s reputation as one of Tokyo’s key anime and pop culture hubs. The commercial district boasts the popular Otome Road, with female-centric anime, manga, butler cafes, and cosplay product stores. KADOKAWA is also building a “world-class anime city” in the area, among other anime-related initiatives.
