BTS Signals Pre-Release Power Shift in Streaming Economy

Huge pre-save surges reframe success criteria, making first-week streaming a key indicator of an album’s success, even before it is released.

  • BTS is redefining success measures by making pre-saves the major criterion, with ARIRANG reportedly reaching 4.73 million before its debut.
  • Pre-saves are now altering release strategy, with industry increasingly focusing on first-week streaming impact even before the song is formally released on sites such as Spotify.
  • K-pop's growth is becoming more and more unbalanced, with groups such as BLACKPINK and Stray Kids dominating while releases from other groups receive substantially less attention.

BTS is radically changing the music release cycle worldwide. With their new project, ARIRANG, which reportedly amassed 4.73 million pre-saves on Spotify's Countdown Chart, the group is leading a push for "pre-release power." These figures, cited by Pop Core on X, established a gigantic pace ahead of titles such as BLACKPINK's DEADLINE (1.23M) and projects such as Stray Kids' DO IT (1.08M), setting the one-million mark as the new standard for premium releases.

Why Pre-Saves Are Now the Top Predictor of Global Music Growth

While these data mirror larger industry trends, the mechanisms are verifiable. Spotify verifies that approximately 70% of users who pre-save a project listen to it during its first week, moving the pre-save from a promotional tool to a highly accurate prediction metric. This transition correlates with a streaming-dominant market; according to the IFPI, 752 million paid members accounted for 69% of global recorded music income in 2024, a year in which Spotify alone paid out more than $10 billion USD to the industry. Furthermore, Spotify revealed in its official 2026 reports that it paid out over $11B to the music industry in 2025.

K-pop’s Growth Shows Increasing Market Polarization

Within this high-stakes ecosystem, K-pop has emerged as a leader in translating devotion into platform activity, but data show a growing gap. While top-tier performers receive multi-million-dollar sales, other projects such as ENHYPEN's THE SIN: VANISH (499,000), CORTIS' GREENGREEN (369,000), and TWICE's TEN: THE STORY GOES ON (299,000) experienced a significant dip in momentum. This concentration of worldwide attention indicates that market expansion is no longer consistent across the board.

All in all, the ARIRANG rush shows that in today's streaming economy, success is evaluated weeks before release through streaming success, rather than at launch. And, within this trend paradigm, BTS isn't just pioneering it; they're changing how early a hit starts.
