Continuing its remarkable award run, KPop Demon Hunters has now received a nomination for the 2026 Humanitas Prize, according to the full nominee list Variety and Billboard published on July 13. Humanitas is a writers-dedicated award, honoring film and TV writers “whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way.”
The nomination credits Maggie Kang, Danya Jimenez, Chris Appelhans, and Hannah McMechan, the team behind the film’s story and screenplay. KPop Demon Hunters is competing in Humanitas 2026’s Family Feature category.
The category also includes Elio, Grow, and Hoppers, 2025 releases that earned recognition for their exploration of the human experience and emotions. Similar to Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, Elio was also nominated for several awards, including the Oscars 2026.
The nomination extends KPop Demon Hunters’ momentum across the 2026 awards season. The Netflix feature has already claimed major honors, including the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Golden, reinforcing its crossover appeal of music-focused storytelling.
2026 Humanitas Prize Recognition Highlights KPop Demon Hunters' Storytelling
Founded in 1974, the Humanitas Prizes honor TV and Film writers across 10 categories. Unlike most industry and creative awards, Humanitas honors the screenplay and storytelling depth solely with a benchmark that focuses on the depiction of humanity.
In 2026’s edition, the award committee has selected 40 projects across the categories, with films and television series competing on the strength of their writing. The Humanitas recognition marks another prestigious milestone for KPop Demon Hunters, which blends K-pop culture, fantasy, and Korean mythology into a narrative centered on identity, family, and self-acceptance.
The movie was initially conceived with a darker and more violent pitch, before Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) shifted towards a more family-friendly direction. That approach has resonated with a global audience, making the film the most-watched animated movie or any English-language movie on the platform.
Additionally, KPop Demon Hunters is the only K-pop-inspired film represented among the 2026 Humanitas nominees, with no other K-pop-themed or South Korean projects receiving a nomination. SPA and Netflix debuted the film on the streaming platform on June 20, 2025.
Winners will be announced on Sep 9 at Avalon Hollywood, in a ceremony hosted by writer-comedian Ashley Nicole Black. Winnie Holzman, whose credits include My So-Called Life and Wicked, will also receive the Kieser Award for work celebrating humanity at the ceremony.
