How KPop Demon Hunters Franchise Became an IP Giant
KPop Demon Hunters Shifted From Violent Pitch to Franchise Hit
Director Maggie Kang says Sony reworked the film’s darker original concept after executives saw wider franchise and merchandising potential.
Highlights
- KPop Demon Hunters franchise evolved from a dark, violence-heavy concept into a family-friendly hit after Sony identified its IP potential.
- Creative strategy preserved K-pop identity while expanding audience reach, driving streaming success, and global recognition.
- KPop Demon Hunters sequel is targeting a 2029 release date, highlighting SPA’s long-term investment.
Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters was initially developed as a darker and more violent animated film, according to the co-director of the movie, Maggie Kang. However, after six months into production, SPA pivoted to a broader audience strategy that turned the project into a breakout franchise success.
In a May 17 interview with Deadline, Kang revealed that the earlier version of the film carried a far more adult tone. It was “dark, adult, and very violent,” Kang said. Chris Appelhans was attached to the project after SPA President Kristine Belson said she believed the movie had a “franchise potential,” which resulted in the change in tone.
The shift helped transform KPop Demon Hunters into one of SPA’s strongest original IP launches in recent years. The KPop Demon Hunters franchise enjoyed popularity through its blend of South Korean pop culture, fantasy-blended action, and music-driven storytelling, positioning it within the anime-inspired action-fantasy animated films and Korean entertainment exports.
KPop Demon Hunters Franchise: From Dark Vision to Global Fandom
Sony's commercial instincts reshaped the project from Kang’s 2018 pitch about a K-pop girl group battling mythological demons, which was heavy on horror elements. SPA’s direction gave KPop Demon Hunters a much family-oriented positioning, while preserving its K-pop identity.
According to Kang, the team focused on cultural specifications. “We wanted every little detail to be historically and culturally correct,” she said, while discussing how she envisioned the cultural representation. Korean linguistics professor Mijeong Mimi Kim worked as a course-corrector for the film’s script to identify linguistic issues tied to cultural specifications.
Such minute attention and KPop Demon Hunters’ genre-blend resulted in a streaming and merchandising success, helping establish the KPop Demon Hunters franchise as a potential long-term IP for Sony.
The KPop Demon Hunters franchise struck toy deals with Hasbro and Mattel, along with collaborations from many lifestyle brands. Netflix recently expanded the franchise by publishing with a comic box set. The streamer also announced a KPop Demon Hunters arena tour to bring it into a real-world concert experience.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Eyes a 2029 Release Date
Netflix has already greenlit The KPop Demon Hunters sequel with both Kang and Appelhans. In an official statement at the time of the sequel confirmation, Kang said, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.”
She had also teased back then that there were many new plot points that they wished to bring to the audience. In the Deadline interview, she stressed that they want full creative control of KPop Demon Hunters 2.
“Because this is now a franchise and the creative is so important, and everything that comes out of this franchise has to be high quality,’’ Kang stated. She positioned the sequel as “fresh, surprising, and original.” The sequel movie is currently looking at a 2029 release date.
Nonetheless, the early change in the creative direction shows how a single approach changed KPop Demon Hunters from an adult-oriented horror-themed movie to a widely appealing fantasy movie. And the strategy worked, with the film becoming a cultural phenomenon with two Oscar wins, two Golden Globe awards, multiple Annie awards, and two Critics' Choice awards.
