Sword Art Online: Sugary Days went on sale in Japan on Aug 7 through Dengeki Bunko, with new illustrations. The initiative marks the first time this novel has received broad commercial presence more than a decade after Sugary Days first took shape.
Author Reki Kawahara confirmed the launch on X as the book reached Japanese retailers. Publisher KADOKAWA listed the title with a retail price of ¥880 (~$5.58 USD), including tax. Sugary Days originated as a story collection that revisits Kirito and Asuna’s married life in Aincrad.
The 264-page paperback Sword Art Online: Material 1 – Sugary Days features Reki Kawahara’s story alongside illustrations from abec. As of now, no English-language release has been announced. Yen Press, which publishes the mainline Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online: Progressive series in North America, has not commented.
Sword Art Online: Sugary Days From Collector-Exclusive to Shelves
Kawahara wrote Sugary Days as a set of short stories distributed at fan events, COMITIA doujinshi conventions. He revised and partially compiled the material as a bonus novel bundled with the limited-edition Blu-ray release of Sword Art Online II in 2015. A complete, novel-length edition with a new epilogue followed in 2018.
Sugary Days occupies a unique place in the Sword Art Online canon. The story begins shortly after The Day Before, following Kirito and Asuna as they settle into their log cabin on Aincrad's 22nd Floor after getting married. What starts as a slice-of-life narrative evolves into an adventure involving custom-made furniture and craftsman player Mahokl, while further exploring the couple’s relationship.
The release also arrives as the Sword Art Online (SAO) franchise continues to expand into side stories beyond its mainline novels. The franchise’s Echoes of Aincrad game launched globally in July, with the long-form anime special Unanswered//butterfly.
Earlier this year, SAO also unveiled the original anime film Sword Art Online the Movie: Integral Domain, scheduled for a 2028 theatrical release. A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio are producing the film with Shingo Adachi.
The mainline SAO light novel series, which debuted in 2009, has sold more than 30M copies globally, while the console games amassed over 10M downloads, according to NextShark. With the franchise now monetizing archival and previously limited material, the release reflects a broader publishing strategy of extending the lifespan of established IP through accessible reissues alongside new projects.
