Highlights

  • Shuhei Yoshida, former president of SIE Worldwide Studios, says he no longer plays AAA games because they demand too much time.
  • Yoshida credits digital storefronts and self-publishing tools with making it easier than ever to create and release a game.
  • He believes community support is the key differentiator for indie success, with early audiences becoming invested advocates.

Shuhei Yoshida spent over a decade shaping PlayStation's first-party lineup as president of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Worldwide Studios. He shifted roles at Sony, championing independent developers as head of PlayStation Indies. Despite working with AAA games most of his life, he claims he no longer plays them.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Yoshida said he stopped playing AAA games because they take too much time.  His broader argument is less about personal preference and more about where he sees the industry heading structurally. He thinks that indie games will lead gaming in the future.

Why Yoshida Thinks Indies Will Define the Next Era

Yoshida pointed to digital storefronts and the ability for any developer to act as their own publisher as the single biggest shift the industry has undergone. Making and releasing a game has never been more accessible, and he expects the number of games published to keep climbing.

Yoshida thinks that the sense of community is what drives the success of indie games. He said, "When your games are successful, they (the players) will feel that they are part of the success, so they will become even more passionate about supporting you, it's very, very important to have a strong sense of community support.”

Yoshida's perspective carries weight because of where he sat for so long. PlayStation's relationship with indie developers shifted considerably during his tenure. The PS4 and PS5 have become more meaningfully hospitable platforms for smaller studios than previous generations had been. His read on the industry is informed by years of watching which indie projects broke through and why.

The community argument in particular reflects something that has become increasingly visible across successful indie launches over the past few years. Games like Warframe, Stardew Valley, and Terraria that build a loyal following early often sustain themselves through word of mouth and continued engagement. For developers without the resources to compete on visibility, an invested community functions as both marketing and quality assurance simultaneously.
