Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Sells 1M+ Copies
Square Enix remaster hits milestone in three months, far before creators’ expectations
Highlights
- Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles crossed 1M sales in three months, beating the development team’s long-term projections.
- Creator Yasumi Matsuno admitted the team underestimated the demand for the tactical RPG of the Final Fantasy franchise.
- With enhanced graphics, voiced dialogue, UI upgrades, and tactical view, the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster taps into the booming RPG market.
Japanese video game company Square Enix Co., Ltd.’s Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has surpassed 1 million units sold worldwide within three months of launch. Square Enix confirmed the milestone for the remastered version on Jan 6, 2026.
The sales figure goes well beyond the expectations outlined last year by writer Yasumi Matsuno. He said in June 2025 that the team believed it could take up to three years for the remastered title to reach 800K to 1M sales figures. Speaking after the sales update, Matsuno acknowledged that the team “underestimated the sales figures by too much,” emphasizing the new milestone.
Released in Sept 30, 2025, The Ivalice Chronicles is a modern remaster of the 1997 tactical RPG, Final Fantasy Tactics, originally developed by Square. The updated edition launched across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC, positioning it for a broader global audience.
Development was overseen by Square Enix, with Kazutoyo Maehiro directing the project. After the sales-figure reveal, he thanked the gamer community for their support and emphasized that the new milestone would work as a motivation for future updates of the game, according to PRTimes’ press release.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Gains Momentum as Gamers Reward Remasters
The rapid sales of The Ivalice Chronicles align with a broader resurgence of remastered and remade titles across the global games market. Recent releases such as Resident Evil 4 Remake and Persona 3 Reload have demonstrated that updated versions of established franchises can achieve blockbuster-level results when paired with meaningful technical and design upgrades.
In the case of The Ivalice Chronicles, Square Enix introduced a suite of modern features aimed at accessibility and long-term playability. These include voiced dialogues, enhanced high-definition visuals, a redesigned user interface, adjustable battle speed and difficulty settings, along with another new feature, tactical view.
It currently has Japanese, English, German, and French language availability for interface and subtitles, while the full audio is available in Japanese and English. According to GoNintendo, the new version preserved the original game’s strategic depth while reducing friction for new audiences. The game-narrative features themes like honor, betrayal, and ambition.
The success of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles further strengthens the commercial position of the wider Final Fantasy franchise, which continues to generate revenue across mainline releases, remakes, and spin-offs. Square Enix has not announced any follow-up content for the remaster yet, but as Maehiro has indicated, the team might plan new features and updates, fueled in part by the game’s early performance.
