The creators of Hello Kitty are officially picking up a controller. Sanrio has announced a massive strategic shift, launching a brand new self-publishing division called Sanrio Games. Fueled by a ¥10 billion ($62.9 million USD) investment, the company is stepping away from its strict reliance on external licensing to handle everything from planning to publishing internally. The new label is going all-in on game development, planning to release roughly 10 new titles across various genres over the next three years to build out new intellectual property alongside its beloved legacy characters.
The highly anticipated debut from this new venture is Sanrio Party Land. Scheduled for a simultaneous global release in the fall of 2026, the multiplayer party experience will launch on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Embracing Sanrio’s core philosophy of "Getting Along Together," the vibrant game will feature a staggering roster of more than 145 characters. Players will be able to create custom avatars and dive into minigames and digital board games alongside their favorite legendary mascots. A second, currently unannounced console project is already in pre-production and slated to hit store shelves by March 2027.
While this new pipeline gives Sanrio ultimate creative control, it does come with hefty upfront costs. The company anticipates its standalone games unit will initially run at a loss, projecting heavy development and marketing costs of around ¥2B ($12.5M) per project. However, leadership notes this will have a very limited impact on the company's overall financial health. Proving their momentum, Sanrio recently raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 7% to ¥75.1B ($471 M) as it pushes into these new business arenas.

Linking Digital Play to Global Theme Parks
This strategy goes far beyond just playing on a screen. Sanrio aims to create unique, integrated experiences by linking its games directly with real-world assets rather than treating them as standalone entertainment. Managing Executive Officer Hosuke Hamasaki highlighted plans to tie these new digital titles to the company's global theme parks, physical retail locations, and the Sanrio+ membership program.
Hamasaki explained that by offering games across a variety of genres and linking them to Sanrio's wider world, the company hopes to expand its massive catalog of over 450 IPs and establish a rock-solid earnings foundation for the future, as per Gamedeveloper.
This aggressive push into self-published video games is a core pillar of Sanrio’s 10-year corporate vision, "A Lighthouse Guiding Everyone to Smiles," which was unveiled in May 2025. The groundwork for this gaming venture has been quietly underway since the company established its mid-term management plans in May 2024, actively recruiting specialized industry talent and building collaborative frameworks with proven partners.
While the new game division takes shape, Sanrio will still continue its successful licensing efforts, like the massive Apple Arcade hit Hello Kitty Island Adventure and a recent crossover in Scopely's megahit Monopoly Go. With a globally anticipated Hello Kitty movie also scheduled for a July 2028 release, Sanrio is heavily positioning itself to evolve from a merchandise giant into a dominant global IP platform provider.
