Remedy Issues Profit Warning After Missing Sales Targets

Highlights

  • Remedy issued a profit warning for 2025, recognizing a €14.9 million non-cash impairment tied to FBC: Firebreak’s poor commercial performance.
  • Launched in June, the Control-universe cooperative shooter saw 1 million players in 10 days, aided by Game Pass and PS Plus, but failed to convert interest into lasting sales, especially on Steam.
  • Despite a major September “Breakpoint” update and rapid post-launch patching, sales and player retention remained below expectations, with active daily Steam users now in double digits.

Remedy Entertainment has confirmed to investors that FBC: Firebreak, its multiplayer co-op title set in the Control universe, continues to underperform, prompting the studio to lower its full-year outlook and recognize a substantial non-cash impairment for the majority of the game’s development and publishing costs. Firebreak, which was intended to expand Remedy’s portfolio beyond narrative-driven hits like Alan Wake and Control, struggled to find its audience after a June 17 release, quickly losing momentum after an early boost from console subscription deals.

CEO Tero Virtala Says Remedy Will “Balance Future Investments”

Despite topping 1 million players in 10 days, primarily thanks to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus partnerships, the shooter experienced sharp drop-off, particularly among PC players.

Remedy responded with immediate updates and, on September 29, delivered the “Breakpoint” overhaul, refreshing core gameplay, adding new content, and fixing launch complaints. While these efforts improved player sentiment and briefly lifted engagement, they still fell short of Remedy’s sales targets, and the studio now expects 2025 operating profit to be negative and below last year’s results.

CEO Tero Virtala says Remedy will “balance future investments” in Firebreak, continuing support for the existing player base but reevaluating the scale of upcoming updates based on revised, lower forecasts. Players can expect a November update (Rogue Protocol) with new modes and features, but further development will be weighed carefully. Remedy’s experience with Firebreak underscores the studio’s challenge in bridging its acclaimed single-player roots with multiplayer ambitions, a misstep that’s cost the company over $17 million to date.

The studio will provide a further update at its Q3 business review later in October, as it pivots back to more proven franchises like Alan Wake and Control 2 while examining lessons learned from Firebreak’s struggles.
