Highlights

  • ShinyHunters, a hacking group, has confirmed it will release Rockstar data after the April 14, 2026, ransom deadline expires.
  • Rockstar stated the breach was limited and linked to a third-party integration, not its core systems.
  • The group claims up to 78.6M records were accessed, while Rockstar maintains players are not impacted.

A hacking group has confirmed it will release data allegedly stolen from Rockstar Games after the ransom deadline passed on April 14, 2026. The developer acknowledged the breach but stated it involves limited information and does not affect operations or players.

ShinyHunters, a group known for targeting major corporations, claimed access to Rockstar’s cloud-linked systems through a third-party service. The attackers initially issued a warning demanding payment, stating they would leak the data if Rockstar did not comply.

Rockstar attributed the breach to an external integration, not its core systems.

“We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach,” a spokesperson said. “This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.”

Rockstar Data Breach Linked to Anodot and Snowflake Systems

Reports indicate the breach originated from Anodot, an analytics platform connected to Snowflake. Attackers allegedly used compromised authentication tokens to access customer data stored across cloud services. However, Snowflake stated the issue was not a failure of its platform and disabled affected accounts after detecting unusual activity.

ShinyHunters claims it obtained up to 78.6M records, though the figure remains unverified.

Reported data includes internal analytics such as player behavior tracking, game economy data, in-game revenue metrics, and customer support systems tied to Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online. Other references suggest potential exposure of marketing plans, financial records, and contracts.

The incident forms part of a broader campaign targeting more than 160 companies through similar methods. Law enforcement agencies generally advise against paying ransomware demands due to the lack of guarantees and risk of encouraging further attacks.

Rockstar has faced prior security incidents, most notably the 2022 leak of early Grand Theft Auto VI footage. The latest breach comes as the studio continues development on GTA VI, now scheduled for Nov 19, 2026, following multiple delays.

The case points out ongoing risks tied to third-party cloud integrations in large-scale game operations.
