Sega Brings Godzilla to Sonic Rumble in Limited-Time Crossover

Time-bound event adds kaiju content to Sega’s live-service title with the aim to sustain early momentum

Tokyo-based video game company Sega Corporation has announced a limited-time crossover to bring Godzilla into Sonic Rumble, marking one of the game’s most high-profile collaborations since launch. The official announcement on Dec 18, 2025, confirmed the crossover will be available from Dec 22, 2025, and run for a month.

Under the collaboration, Sega will bring unlockable Kaiju monsters, a new gameplay narrative, new skills, and RSR shop items. The event will introduce a kaiju-themed battle narrative rather than a cosmetic tie-in, highlighting Sega's intention to employ licensed IPs to enhance live-service engagement as a post-launch effort for Sonic Rumble.

The Sonic Rumble-Godzilla Crossover Details

The event adds a new mode called Godzilla Survival, set within Dr. Eggman’s Toy World, where players navigate environmental threats tied to the kaiju theme. According to Sega, hazards include Godzilla’s signature Heat Ray and Shockirus, inspired by the franchise, shifting the match flow toward “an intense, high-stakes battle at sea.”

The narrative is set amidst the ocean with three boats. To make the battle more intense, players will get only one respawn during each run.

The crossover adds two types of passes, Free and Premium, with different benefits for each. Free Pass grants access to Godzilla with the Heat Ray ability, along with a companion, Fire Rodan. The Premium Pass unlocks another Godzilla ability, Nuclear Pulse, as well as another kaiju, King Ghidorah with Gravity Beams ability, and a “buddy,” Mothra.

The in-game RSR shop is reported to feature the rest of the kaiju characters, Mechagodzilla and Destoroyah, along with their respective abilities, Absolute Zero blast and Variable Slicer, for purchasing. The prices for these items have not yet been revealed.

Sega’s approach to bringing in-game collaboration with a time-bound strategy using a globally recognizable IP mirrors established live-service monetization models across the game industry. The Godzilla crossover is aimed at maintaining the momentum following Sonic Rumble’s early success, to widen its reach beyond core Sonic audiences. The title, launched in Nov 2025, generated $228K USD revenue on mobile within its first 10 days of its release.
