Highlights
- Sony announced a 400-page archival design book and region-specific Reebok sneakers for PlayStation's 30th anniversary, with the book priced up to $325 and launching spring 2026.
- The merchandise includes previously unreleased prototypes and design models in the book, plus three sneaker silhouettes tailored to Japan, U.S., and U.K. markets launching in October.
- The move represents Sony's most significant effort to monetize PlayStation intellectual property beyond game sales, using limited-supply tactics common in collectibles and streetwear markets.
Sony Interactive Entertainment unveiled two limited-edition merchandise lines on Sunday to mark PlayStation's 30th anniversary: a 400-page archival design book and a trio of region-specific Reebok sneakers.
The moves represent Sony's most ambitious attempt yet to monetize its gaming intellectual property outside traditional software sales.
Premium Publishing Play
PlayStation: The First 30 Years, published by London-based Read-Only Memory, will launch in spring 2026 with preorders opening Sept. 29. The book will feature previously unreleased prototypes, concept sketches, and design models from the development of PlayStation's hardware lineup, alongside notes from engineers including Ken Kutaragi, Teiyu Goto, and Yujin Morisawa.
Benedict Redgrove, the photographer behind NASA: Past and Present Dreams of the Future, handled the book's visuals.
Sony is offering two editions: a standard version at $125 and a deluxe edition limited to 1,994 units (matching PlayStation's launch year) priced at $325. The premium package includes a signed print and upgraded packaging. In India, the editions will sell for INR 11,600 and INR 29,900, respectively.
Sneaker Capsule: Region Specific Limited Supply
The Reebok collaboration features three silhouettes tied to specific markets: the InstaPump Fury 94 for Japan, Pump Omni Zone II for the U.S., and Workout Plus for the U.K. The selected Reebok models correspond to the original PlayStation's launch year and the sneakers' popularity at the time in those regions.
The sneakers, launching in October through select retail partners, draw inspiration from the original console's design. Official pricing wasn't disclosed, though sneaker-tracking social media accounts posted figures that drew mixed reactions from fans, with some criticizing scarcity and pricing.
The simultaneous push into archival publishing and fashion marks a shift for Sony's gaming business, which has historically concentrated on game sales and digital services. The strategy employs limited supply and secondary-market dynamics common in streetwear and collectibles, positioning PlayStation as what Sony describes as a cultural brand with tangible assets beyond software.
