Microsoft and Asus have confirmed that the much-anticipated ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld consoles are coming to India, with pre-orders beginning October 7 and launch slated for October 16. First revealed and released overseas, the Ally X is priced at $999.99 (expected around INR 85,000 after taxes), while the standard Ally is $599.99 (around INR 51,000). Both models feature Windows support, and Xbox-inspired controls, aimed at PC and Xbox gamers seeking portable power.
ASUS ROG Ally X To Compete With Steam Deck
The ROG Xbox Ally X brings capable specs for portable gaming: AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB LPDDR5X RAM, 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery capable of lasting over three hours in demanding titles at medium-to-high settings. The regular Ally targets more mainstream buyers with a Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 60Wh battery, all using the easily-upgradable M.2 SSD format.
Handheld gaming devices are making a strong comeback globally, driven by rising demand for mobility, seamless transition between console and PC ecosystems, and remote play opportunities. Advances in chips, cooling, and displays now let users access AAA experiences on the go, helping the segment carve space beside legacy platforms like PCs and consoles.
In India, the market appeal is promising but faces challenges. The country’s affinity for mobile gaming, rising but price-sensitive middle-class, and a growing PC and console gamer base create fertile ground for handhelds, especially for tech-savvy users, streamers, and esports enthusiasts. However, premium pricing, tariff uncertainties, and competition from lower-cost devices may limit its potential in the mobile-first market.
For many, the Ally X and similar devices will remain aspirational gadgets, best suited for enthusiasts craving top-tier portable performance or those wanting access to the Xbox ecosystem on the move. With adequate local support, competitive pricing, and game compatibility, India could emerge as a strong market for handheld gaming’s next wave.
