Aang and Korra headline the new Avatar Legends fighter arriving this summer.
Avatar Legends: 2D Brawler Hits PS5, Xbox, PC & Switch 2 This July
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game arrives July 2 for $29.99. Featuring 12 hand-drawn fighters and 'Flow' combat, it hits PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
Highlights
- Avatar Legends launches July 2 on all platforms for a budget-friendly $29.99.
- The fighter features 12 hand-drawn characters and fluid "Flow System" mechanics.
- Avatar Legends includes a story mode and DLC pass to redefine the series' gaming legacy.
Fans of Aang and Korra finally have a reason to get hyped. During Saturday's Evo Awards, a brand-new trailer revealed that Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is officially launching on July 2. Developer Gameplay Group International, working alongside Paramount, is bringing the 2D brawler to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Better yet, the game is dropping with a highly accessible $29.99 base price, making it an easy pickup for the fighting game community this summer.
When the game arrives, players will get their hands on a tightly curated launch roster featuring twelve familiar faces from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The starting lineup includes standard and Avatar State versions of both Aang and Korra, alongside Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Azula, Ozai, Kyoshi, and the menacing airbender Zaheer.
To make these characters look like they stepped right out of the beloved animated series, the studio poured over 900 hand-drawn animation frames into every single fighter. This incredible visual dedication pairs with a unique "Flow System" that emphasizes fluid movement, plus selectable support characters that let players unlock special moves mid-fight.
For players who prefer offline action, there is a robust suite of solo content. You can dive into an original story campaign, tackle the classic Arcade Mode, or hone your bending skills in Training Mode, Combo Trials, and Character Lessons. There is also a Gallery Mode packed with beautiful music and never-before-seen art for lore enthusiasts to enjoy.
Deluxe Edition Upgrades and Pre-Order Bonuses
If you want a little more than the standard edition offers, a $49.99 Deluxe Edition is also on the table. Upgrading gets you a digital art book, the official soundtrack, unique in-game HUDs, and the Year 1 Pass. That season pass guarantees access to five upcoming DLC fighters as the game expands post-launch.
Pre-orders are already live across all digital storefronts, and early adopters get some sweet bonuses. Reserving your copy will unlock exclusive character color palettes, a voting privilege to actually help the community choose one of the upcoming Year 1 Pass fighters, and a highly requested support skin: Samurai Appa, as per Engadget.
There is a lot riding on this release, mostly because the Avatar franchise has a notoriously troubled history in the video game space. As recently as 2023, licensed games based on the property have been budget titles lacking polish and failing to capture the magic of the universe.
Even the acclaimed action studio PlatinumGames struggled to turn their 2014 Legend of Korra title into a genuine hit. But by respecting the source material and delivering a competent, fully-featured brawler, Avatar Legends has a real shot at breaking the bad-game curse and becoming the best Avatar game yet.
It also lands right in the middle of a golden age for licensed fighting games. Next month marks the debut of Invincible VS, which just showed off Conquest, Universa, and Immortal at the Evo Awards. Then, in August, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will deliver the first new Marvel Comics fighting game in almost a decade.
While Avatar Legends might not have the massive launch rosters of those tag-team heavyweights, its dedication to the source material and budget-friendly entry price means it could easily stand proudly alongside the genre's biggest hitters.
