Crunchyroll unveiled the first character visuals for the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime during its Anime Expo 2026 showcase in Los Angeles on July 3. The reveal introduced three warrior classes from Ghost of Tsushima Legends’ multiplayer warrior system, according to Kamikaze Douga, the animation studio behind the project.
The character art has been designed by veteran artist and character designer Takashi Okazaki, who illustrated the Afro Samurai manga among his other prominent works. The visuals, rendered in a palette of deep crimson and black against monochrome backgrounds, featured three warrior types: the Assassin, Hunter, and Ronin.
The visuals mark the anime’s first substantial look at its characters and production since the project’s announcement in January 2025. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime is scheduled to premiere in 2027 on Crunchyroll, with no specified release date.
What do we Know About the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime?
The Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime is a co-production among Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions. The anime adapts from Sucker Punch Productions’ 2020 open-world, action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima, especially the Legends multiplayer extension.
Takanobu Mizuno, known for working in the Batman Ninja franchise and Star Wars: Visions, is directing the Ghost of Tsushima anime. Fate/Zero and Phantom franchise creator, Gen Urobuchi, whose scripting credits also include Bubble and Psycho-Pass, is overseeing series composition and script with Nitroplus.
Satoshi Maejima is also attached to the script. Hayate, Inc. is producing Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Additional details, including cast, detailed plot, and other creative staff, remain unannounced, approximately 18 months after the series announcement.
What is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime About?
As mentioned, the anime follows Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends multiplayer mode. The original game follows samurai Jin Sakai’s resistance against a Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island in 1274.
The Legends multiplayer mode introduced character archetypes inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. Each warrior type has their own fighting style, abilities, and set of weapons. Since neither production member has detailed a plotline, the anime’s narrative focus remains uncertain.
Ghost of Tsushima sold more than 13M copies as of August 2024, and generated $780 million USD in revenue against a budget of $60M. The success also inspired a standalone sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, which followed mercenary Atsu. The sequel surpassed its predecessor with a 1.25M debut day sales in October 2025.
The project fits Crunchyroll's broader strategy of adapting major non-anime intellectual property. During the announcement, Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini said the collaboration anime would offer fans “a bold, groundbreaking way to experience Ghost of Tsushima.” Later, he cited the project alongside Solo Leveling as a model for adapting non-Japanese IPs that can generate a global fandom.
