March 31: The digital portal opens for India’s first HYBE-localized trainee search
HYBE India Audition Website to Go Live on March 31
HYBE India has set key dates to announce major audition details, including eligibility criteria, amid fan outrage against HYBE over Heeseung’s exit from ENHYPEN.
- HYBE is going to open its India audition website on March 31 with full details, also confirming a final update on April 7.
- Applicants stay concerned about age barriers and how the K-pop trainee program would integrate into India's more traditional career schedules.
- Backlash over Heeseung's departure from ENHYPEN is spilling over into the India rollout, potentially putting pressure on HYBE.
HYBE, the South Korean entertainment giant behind BTS, is pushing ahead with its massive expansion into the Indian market. However, the launch is overshadowed by widespread dissatisfaction following the high-profile departure of a popular artist of the company, Heeseung of ENHYPEN.
Nevertheless, the company published its "HYBE India Audition Scheduler" this week, marking a clear shift away from audience acquisition to direct domestic talent sourcing. After a preliminary announcement on March 24, the organization is preparing for an important March 31 update, which will include the opening of an online audition portal. On the same day, HYPE India will also release detailed information related to the audition, including eligibility criteria, with a final announcement dated for April 7.
HYBE India’s Local Talent Push Sparks Cultural Difference Concerns
HYBE's strategic transition intends to build a localized infrastructure in India, similar to past initiatives in areas such as Japan (&TEAM) and Latin America (Santos Bravos). However, the rollout is causing immediate conflict with a prospective talent pool trapped between the conventional Indian career pathways and the rapid schedules of the K-pop trainee system.
Such public perceptions reflect a frantic concern about age restrictions, with applicants born between 2002 and 2005 voicing "late blooming" fears. The demographic tension reveals a deeper cultural contradiction between talent-based meritocracy and the Seoul-based industry's rigorous debut cycles. Potential applicants are also looking for clarity on technical logistics, notably whether the process would eventually involve in-person rounds in key Indian metropolitan areas or will be primarily conducted online. Additionally, people are also concerned about what type of songs HYBE would look for since it's generally associated with up-beat tonalities.

HYBE's India Expansion Hit by Backlash Over Heeseung’s ENHYPEN Exit?
Compounding these logistical challenges is a developing public relations crisis that arose after Heeseung departed from his group ENHYPEN, now also charting global success. His March 10 exit was officially noted as a mutual decision to pursue a solo career; however, the move had sparked significant criticism by a global fanbase, including in India. The effects peaked on March 18 when fans sent over 1,500 calls and emails to the South Korean National Pension Service, who is allegedly a significant shareholder of HYBE, in two hours of protest against his leaving management.
Further reports of a contractual requirement for Heeseung to stay in South Korea for his solo debut have angered Indian supporters, who are concerned about his absence from regional launch festivities. Notably, various hashtags related to bringing Heeseung back to ENHYPEN flooded the comments section of the Indian audition post.

Amidst this, for HYBE, the India project is an important test of its management strategy. As the March 31 deadline approaches, the corporation must balance technological expectations for a new market with growing cynicism in its artist relationships. Whether HYBE can effectively discover a localized "Indian BTS" while navigating this hazardous "perfect storm" will be the key question of its 2026 worldwide strategy.
