New Code Geass Anime and Manga Announced for 20th-Anniversary
With a brand-new anime series, manga, and re-releases, Code Geass’ “Road to 20th Year” marks a strategic IP reboot
Highlights
- As part of the Code Geass 20th anniversary campaign, Sunrise announced Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspar, with new characters, visuals, mecha designs, and a production team led by director Kazuya Nomura.
- A rare Code Geass and Mobile Suit Gundam crossover manga is in development with illustrations from Satoshi Ogasawara, merging two of the most iconic mecha franchises for the first time.
- The “Road to CODE GEASS 20th Year” initiative also includes free YouTube streaming of the original 2006 series, nationwide theatrical re-screenings of all 13 films, plus new merchandise launches.
The Code Geass franchise unveiled a slate of new projects as part of its 20th anniversary celebration in 2026. On Dec 6, a brand-new anime, a crossover manga, a series of re-releases, and a new merchandise collection, along with the previous stage productions news, were confirmed by the rights-holders.
The centerpiece of these announcements is a new anime, titled Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspar (“Aspal the Star Chaser”), described as a completely new work rather than a mere sequel or spin-off. At the same time, a crossover manga between Code Geass and another classic franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam, was announced. The collaboration is reported to be based on the 2006 original anime, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and the 1995 premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
The 20th year celebration, noted as “Road to CODE GEASS 20th Year,” was revealed on Oct 6, 2025, promising new projects, releases, a new 2.5D stage musical, and the like. The Code Geass franchise, produced under Sunrise, is one of the most revered sci-fi mecha series to date. Even after almost two decades since its first release, Code Geass is still one of the most-watched anime titles.
Code Geass’ New Anime and Manga
Code Geass: Hoshi Oi no Aspar, the newly announced anime, is set to introduce fresh characters, a new design, and a different creative team altogether. As per the announcement, the series will be directed by Kazuya Nomura, known for working on the Ghost in the Shell franchise and Moriarty the Patriot. Novelist Mado Nozaki, writer of the famed Babylon novel series and Hello World light novel, is in charge of the script.
Character designs are entrusted to illustrator Rolua, while “Agarmatha” (mecha), a franchise staple, will be designed by Yoshi. Additionally, designer Ichinogi has created the title logo. Mobile Suit Gundam's famed Junbun Lin is in charge of special effects and background work.
While the plotline of the new anime is yet to be specified, reporting from Japan Anime News noted it as a reimagination of the world of Code Geass itself, which leaves much room for speculation, considering the rich and multilayered lore of the series. No confirmed release date or format (whether a series, OVA, or movie) has been specified in the announcement.
In parallel, the franchise will publish the collaboration manga with Mobile Suit Gundam; however, this project lacks a release date and narrative details. Manga artist Satoshi Ogasawara will be drawing the crossover manga. While many details remain to be disclosed, this project marks a rare merging of two main mecha-anime legacies, leaving fans awaiting.
Legacy IP Revival Under 20th Anniversary Campaign
The new projects are a part of the broader campaign of “Road to CODE GEASS 20th Year,” while focusing on producing new works, it also plans a comprehensive re-engagement pipeline with re-releases. Central to this revival strategy is the reintroduction of the original television series (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) through free weekend streaming on YouTube in Japan, starting from Dec 28, 2025.
Parallel to this, Sunrise has planned a nationwide theatrical re-screening of all 13 Code Geass films, including compilation titles and spin-offs. As per the announcement, the movies will be screened on the first and third Tuesdays and Thursdays of every month, starting from Jan 6 to June 25, 2026. The four-part Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture is scheduled for TV broadcast in July 2026. It was originally released in theaters in 2024, before streaming on Disney+.
The celebration campaign will also see new merchandise activities, such as new S.H. Figuarts articulated figures and HG Zi-Apollo model kits, among others. Taken together, the initiative reframes Code Geass as a continuously operating media property rather than a legacy catalog title. The strategy appears tailored to maximize visibility in Japan. A global rollout for these projects has not yet been announced officially.
