- The dark fantasy, which re-imagines Disney villains at a magical school, is planned for three seasons.
Aniplex, the powerhouse studio behind the 2024 blockbuster Solo Leveling, has launched another massive global hit with Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation. The new series, which adapts the popular mobile game of the same name, debuted on Disney+ and Hulu on October 29, 2025, and has immediately surged up international streaming charts, proving the studio's expertise in adapting popular IPs.
The anime's success is already undeniable. According to streaming analytics site FlixPatrol, as of November 8, Disney Twisted-Wonderland is the fourth highest-performing series on Disney+ worldwide. It is notably outperforming major live-action competitors like 9-1-1 Nashville, The Manipulated, and Would You Marry Me?
The ranking, which pulls data from over 40 territories, shows the series is trending strongly in North and Latin America—including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, among others.
Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation is a direct adaptation of the popular mobile game developed by Aniplex in collaboration with Walt Disney Japan, which first launched in 2020 in Japan. The game, which uses a "gacha" model similar to Genshin Impact, built a large fanbase by allowing players to collect characters inspired by Disney villains.
The show's immediate success highlights a growing trend of high-quality adaptations from mobile games and webtoons becoming major drivers for streaming services.
A Dark Fantasy Spin on Disney Villains
Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation's story is a dark fantasy that transports protagonist Yuken Enma, an ordinary high school student, from the real world to Night Raven College, a magical academy. This school is divided into seven dormitories, each themed after an iconic Disney villain, including the Evil Queen, Scar, Maleficent, and Hades.
With no magic of his own, Yuken must navigate this strange new world while trying to find a way home. The first season, titled "Episode of Heartslabyul," focuses on the dorm inspired by the Queen of Hearts.
This launch marks another significant international win for Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony. The company already dominated the anime conversation earlier this year with Solo Leveling on Crunchyroll. By launching another successful franchise on a competing platform like Disney+, Aniplex is cementing its position as a versatile production powerhouse, backing Sony's strategic focus on anime and gaming investments.
The series is planned for three seasons, with the next two set to explore the "Savanaclaw" and "Octavinelle" dorms, ensuring that this dark Disney spin-off will remain a key franchise for the platform and Aniplex for the foreseeable future.
