Above the main entrance, the name "SHINSEGAE" is displayed in prominent white capital letters next to a red, eight-petaled flower logo on a dark brown overhang. The glass double doors are plastered with repeating rows of the word "SALE" printed vertically in bold red text. To the right of the entrance, large glass storefront windows showcase luxury brand advertisements, including a prominent display for TAG Heuer. In the foreground, a pedestrian in a white long-sleeve shirt walks toward the doors, while another pedestrian in a black t-shirt walks along the paved gray plaza carrying shopping bags and a red umbrella.

Shinsegae’s Growth: South Korea's Retail Tourism Breaks Records

Shinsegae's latest numbers point to a different kind of expansion in South Korea’s retail sector and foreign visitor spending.

Highlights

  • South Korea’s retail tourism is redefining shopping habits for foreign tourists, as their arrival fuels record growth.
  • Notably, Shinsegae Department Store is on track for a historic sales milestone as K-pop installations and cultural experiences lure global shoppers.
  • The South Korean department store sector is set to record over $600 million USD in foreign sales, driven by these changing travel and consumer trends.

South Korea’s retail landscape is experiencing a boom as global tourists are simultaneously driving demand for duty-free luxury shopping and experiential pop culture, while also exploring culinary destinations. Driven by this trend, Shinsegae Department Store recorded a massive ₩580 billion (~ $388 million USD) in foreign sales for the first half of the year, marking a 120% surge over the same period last year. To put that into context, during the first half of 2025, Shinsegae had already achieved 90% of its full-year foreign sales.

If this upward trajectory sustains, the domestic department store sector could surpass the ₩1 trillion (~ $670M) threshold in foreign sales for the first time. As reported by Maeil Business, the probable cause of this outcome could be the upcoming peak travel season, the Chuseok holidays, and year-end shopping demand in the second half of the year.

Foreign Tourism Reshapes Retail Spending

This fiscal growth reflects a deep diversification of the South Korean tourism base. Before the pandemic, the market relied heavily on large Chinese group tours. In 2019, Chinese nationals made up 77.5% of Shinsegae’s foreign sales; that footprint declined to 48.5% in the first half of 2026. On the other hand, the share of U.S. consumers climbed from 1.1% to 19.1%, while tourists from Southeast Asian and other regional markets grew by 14.9%.

Cultural Experiences Drive Shopping Growth

Reportedly, these fresh travelers are moving towards comprehensive lifestyle experiences, boosting sectors like fashion, cosmetics, and regional food. To capture this influx, major retailers are embedding cultural IPs directly into commercial spaces.

For instance, Shinsegae’s Myeong-dong headquarters has set itself up as a cultural destination by featuring K-pop content. It included installations for K-pop groups like ATEEZ, BTS and BOYNEXTDOOR, driving foreign visitors to account for one-third of its total foot traffic.

Similarly, the retailer’s Gangnam branch has attributed its retail footprint to local culinary and hospitality infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Busan Centum City branch saw its foreign sales climb 230% due to the growing regional cruise architecture.

As tourism expenditures are increasingly divided between the usual duty-free channels and immersive urban retail hubs, the metrics for retail competitiveness show a change. As it seems, the market may no longer be dominated purely by inventory, but rather be boosted by a retailer's ability to curate authentic cultural experiences.
