Highlights

  • The Blue Box season 2 release is set for October 4, 2026.
  • The anime returns with a new director and studio while maintaining core creative staff for continuity.
  • The series stands out among sports romance anime, balancing athletics and relationships.

Exactly one year after its season 1 finale aired globally, the Ao no Hako season 2 (Blue Box season 2) is in motion, with an October 2026 release window. On March 28, during the Blue Box stage event at AnimeJapan 2026, Blue Box season 2 visual and teaser trailer were unveiled, confirming the release.

The news follows the show’s strong reception during its first season, which combined sports storytelling with romance and slice-of-life elements. Blue Box adapts Koji Miura’s manga by the same name, with a narrative centered on Taiki and Chinatsu's dreams of becoming national-level basketball and badminton players.

As of now, the manga has sold over 7M copies, signaling the property's strong commercial momentum. With Blue Box season 2 now confirmed, attention shifts to production continuity, release timing, and distribution strategy as the series opts to sustain its initial momentum.

When Will Blue Box Season 2 Start Airing?

Blue Box season 2 is confirmed to premiere on October 4 at 4:30 pm JST. It will initially broadcast on Japanese television and then stream on OTTs. An international release schedule is yet to be disclosed.

Where can Viewers Watch Blue Box Season 2?

Netflix licensed the first season and streamed it worldwide, with a two-cour release strategy. The platform will reportedly carry season 2 as well. The streaming platform has, however, not announced a proper distribution structure for Blue Box season 2, yet.

As mentioned, Blue Box season 2 will first land on TV in Japan, with TBS airing the episodes on Sundays.

What's New in Blue Box Season 2's Production?

The second season arrives with notable changes behind the camera. Daisuke Sakō, known for Lupin Zero, takes over as director from the first season's Yūichirō Yano. Electric Circus replaces animation studio Telecom Animation Film.

However, character designer Miho Tanino and series composer Yuko Kakihara are returning to their roles, aiming to continue the aesthetic that defined the first season of the anime. The returning voice cast includes Shōya Chiba as Taiki Inomata, Reina Ueda as Chinatsu Kano, and Akari Kitō as Hina Chono.

Blue Box season 2 will also introduce a new character, Yumeka Goto, who will be voiced by Yoshino Aoyama. Goto is Chinatsu's former basketball teammate.

Season 1 adapted the story through the Autumn Training Camp arc, ending around chapter 80 of the Blue Box manga. The upcoming season 2 is expected to pick up from this point and will further explore the relationship between Taiki and Chinatsu, while expanding focus to the protagonists’ athletic ambitions.

How Does Blue Box Differ From Other High-School Sports Anime?

Part of what makes Blue Box a unique anime in its genre is precisely what usual high-school sports anime refuse to do. In core sports anime like Haikyuu!! and Blue Lock, romance elements are scarce or not added at all, such that it does not overtake the sports elements.

The Blue Box franchise manages a flawless thematic transition between the two, something most high-school anime struggle to sustain. The intersection differentiates it from more over-the-top sports titles, including those like Kuroko's Basketball and Ahiru no Sora, which touches on romance elements but don't illustrate them as a focal point of the narrative.
