PlatinumGames to Develop TMNT: The Last Ronin for Paramount
Paramount Games Studio taps PlatinumGames to rebuild the gritty TMNT: The Last Ronin as a AAA action-adventure title, bringing world-class combat to the franchise.

- The game adapts the gritty comic series, featuring a lone survivor’s revenge quest in a futuristic New York City.
The highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin video game has a brand new developer. During the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5, 2026, the newly retooled Paramount Games Studio officially announced that Japanese action masters PlatinumGames are building the project from the ground up as a AAA action-adventure experience for PC and consoles. The decision to hand the reins to the Bayonetta developer came down to genuine passion rather than just a desire to cash a paycheck.
According to Dan Prigg, the executive vice president and head of games for Paramount, PlatinumGames had expressed interest in the franchise early on and proved to be huge fans of the IP. Prigg explained that when his team met with the developers to review their ideas, the excitement on both sides was undeniable. He noted that finding a top-tier AAA studio that is fiercely passionate about the source material is exactly what the company is looking for.
Originally revealed in 2023, The Last Ronin was initially in development at Black Forest Games under publisher THQ Nordic. However, following the major merger between Paramount and Skydance, finalized in August 2025, that iteration was halted.
Prigg noted that while this reboot might not have happened pre-merger, the newly unified company was in a strong position to evaluate the project, realize its potential, and restart development from scratch with a studio famous for delivering world-class combat.
The Rebirth of Paramount Games Studio
The announcement serves as a flagship moment for Paramount Games Studio, which was re-announced just hours before the Summer Game Fest. While the division had previously existed in various forms, most recently working on licensed products like a SpongeBob SquarePants activation for Roblox, the merger has completely transformed it.
Prigg, who previously headed Skydance Interactive, now oversees a consolidated banner that includes both Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media. The studio will continue developing internally confirmed blockbuster titles like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and an untitled Star Wars game, while collaborating with external studios to launch games like The Last Ronin and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
Based on the wildly popular, dark comic book miniseries, The Last Ronin follows the sole surviving Ninja Turtle on a brutal quest for revenge through a futuristic, battle-ravaged New York City. The game aims to capture the heavy emotional weight of the comic by taking heavy gameplay inspiration from Sony's modern God of War titles.
PlatinumGames brings an impressive track record to this challenge, known globally for fast-paced action hits like NieR: Automata and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The studio is also familiar with the heroes in a half-shell, having previously developed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan in 2016.
Currently, Paramount Games Studio has not shared an official release window or any specific gameplay footage for the title. As development has essentially just rebooted under PlatinumGames, fans are advised to be patient as the team works to deliver a definitive AAA Turtles experience. More announcements from Paramount's new gaming division are expected shortly.
