Highlights

  • Reggie Fils-Aimé is surprised by Xbox’s limited game releases and announcements for Nintendo Switch 2 as of late 2025.
  • He expects Xbox to leverage more third-party publishing on Switch 2 beyond games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Indiana Jones.
  • Fils-Aimé notes the end of direct hardware competition and stresses the importance of software cross-support to expand audiences.

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé expressed surprise that Microsoft has not released more Xbox games for the Nintendo Switch 2, given the potential for crossover between the two platforms. Fils-Aimé said he expected several more dedicated announcements from Xbox, especially leading into the holiday season, but was surprised that this has not happened yet.

Fils-Aimé’s on Xbox’s Third-Party Publishing Strategy

In an interview with The Game Business, Fils-Aimé noted that while Microsoft has released some titles on Switch 2, such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and the upcoming Indiana Jones and The Great Circle. However, many Xbox first-party games have yet to be ported or announced for the console.

He emphasized that the years of direct hardware competition between Xbox and PlayStation are over, with Microsoft now acting primarily as a third-party publisher with hardware. From this perspective, it would make sense for Xbox to expand its software presence on platforms like Switch 2 to reach a wider audience.

He also remarked on the Switch 2’s game lineup, noting that while major franchises like Mario Kart and Zelda led the launch, the rest of the lineup felt somewhat smaller in scale compared to prior generations. Despite this, Fils-Aimé praised Nintendo for leveraging enhanced content and subscriptions to drive momentum.

According to Fils-Aimé, Xbox still needs to capitalize fully on its third-party publishing strength by making more games available on Switch 2 beyond Minecraft. He believes that the final quarter of 2025 may be Xbox’s last big opportunity to announce substantial support before Microsoft shifts all efforts fully to Switch 2 development.

His perspective highlights the current transitional state of console partnerships and the evolving dynamics of third-party publishing. As we head into 2026, there is more cross-platform collaboration in the gaming industry than ever before.
