Highlights

  • Blue Eye Samurai season 2 is now expected to release in 2027.
  • The story follows Mizu to London, expanding the revenge narrative beyond Japan and introducing a cultural clash in her journey.
  • With returning creators, Netflix aims to maintain the Emmy-winning series’ high production quality and global appeal.

New reports indicate Netflix’s Emmy-winning animated series Blue Eye Samurai season 2 has shifted to a 2027 release window, changing the series’ previously expected 2026 release window. The speculative 2026 timeline circulated after a Collider interview with the show's creators in 2024.

Created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, the Edo-period revenge drama, Blue Eye Samurai, became one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed animations, with four Emmy wins. Following its season 1 success, the Blue Eye Samurai series was renewed in December 2023, with Netflix confirming active production in 2025.

Back then, Netflix did not confirm a release date; the streamer has yet to do so. On the other hand, What's on Netflix reported in January 2026 that Blue Eye Samurai season 2 is expected to be released in 2027. Blue Eye Samurai is not listed within Netflix's official 2026 anime slate, nor has any trailer or promotional initiative been taken, which is typical for Netflix exclusives; all pointing towards a release no sooner than 2027.

Mizu Heads West: What Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Covers

Blue Eye Samurai centers on cross-dressing protagonist Mizu’s revenge journey to kill her biological father. “Revenge is her religion,” emphasized co-creator Amber Noizumi in a statement in Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai season 2 ‘sneak peak.’

Season 2 continues this journey directly from Blue Eye Samurai season 1 finale, with Mizu sailing toward London in pursuit of the two remaining men who could potentially be her father. Noizumi and Green said in a statement, “Mizu has a lot more blood to spill,” while discussing the plot of  Blue Eye Samurai season 2.

Creators also confirmed that Mizu has already killed one of the men she’s pursuing, Violet, prior to season 1’s narrative. According to Green, season 1’s antagonist Fowler remains alive because “he has function, he's a road map to the others,” and Mizu plans to kill him later after utilizing him.

Noizumi has framed the Blue Eye Samurai London arc, Mizu’s first journey to the West, as a cultural reckoning. “It would be an interesting part of Mizu's personal journey to see how Europeans react to her,” Noizumi said. Additionally, creators also hinted that several characters from the first season will return, including Taigen, Ringo, Akemi, and the Swordfather.

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Production Continues With Same Core Team

As mentioned, Netflix has confirmed Blue Eye Samurai season 2 is currently in production, with returning creators Noizumi and Green continuing as writers and executive producers. Erwin Stoff continues as executive producer, and Jane Wu is back as supervising director and producer.

French animation studio Blue Spirit is handling animation production, aiming to continue the series’ signature hybrid 2D-3D visuals. Blue Eye Samurai season 1’s core voice cast is expected to return, including Maya Erskine as Mizu, Brenda Song as Akemi, Masi Oka as Ringo,  Kenneth Branagh as Abijah Fowler, and Darren Barnet as Taigen.

While the season 2 release date remains undisclosed, Blue Eye Samurai remains one of Netflix’s most closely watched animated releases. Following its debut in November 2023, Blue Eye Samurai entered Netflix Global Top 10 for two consecutive weeks and charted across 50 countries.

The 2027 window places Blue Eye Samurai season 2 alongside other major Netflix titles, including THE ONE PIECE and Jujutsu Kaisen season 4. For a series that redefined what prestige animation can accomplish, the possible move to 2027 indicates Netflix’s commitment to deliver the standard that made Blue Eye Samurai a benchmark.
