BTS Jimin Revealed as LoL Player on BTS: The Return
BTS’ Jimin Revealed as a Dedicated LoL Player in BTS Documentary
Jimin’s 10-hour gaming session in BTS: The Return spotlights South Korea's pop and esports cultures colliding.
Highlights
- BTS: The Return Netflix showcases BTS’ Jimin’s League of Legends playing habits.
- The moment highlights a growing K-pop and esports crossover, reflecting shared audiences between music and gaming communities.
- The League of Legends and Jimin link extends beyond the documentary, with past collaborations involving pro players like Faker.
A scene from Netflix's BTS: The Return, released on March 27, shows BTS member Jimin as a dedicated League of Legends (LoL) player who logs for 10-plus-hour sessions on off days. He plays as a support, necessary for guiding the team towards victory and creating opportunities for the team.
The documentary, BTS: The Return, is directed by Bao Nguyen and co-produced by HYBE and This Machine. It follows all seven members through their post-military reunion in L.A. and the recording of their fifth studio album, ARIRANG.
BTS’ Jimin as a League of Legends Player
BTS's relationship with LoL runs deeper than one documentary scene. In November 2020, Faker and T1 appeared on Run BTS in an episode.
Back then, Jimin and T1 member Faker played together as a team. Jimin even joked, stating, “I'm really talented in helping players with great potential. So if you trust me with him, I'm sure I can make Sanghyuk (Faker) into a great player like Faker.”
South Korea is increasingly betting on its pop-culture and esports, with these sectors becoming key pillars for the country’s economy. The convergence of these two media productions has previously brought virtual K-pop group K/DA, which consists of themed versions of five LoL NPCs.
Among these five members, Ahri and Akali were voiced by girl group (G)I-dle members Miyeon and Soyeon, respectively. Among the rest, Evelynn was voiced by Madison Beer, and Kai'Sa, by Jaira Burns.
However, Jimin being a dedicated LoL player represents a significant visibility boost for Riot in front of BTS' global fanbase, without any formal endorsement. Whether Riot formalizes any association with BTS for future collaborations remains to be seen.
