Highlights

  • Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway shatters Demon Slayer's record with an unprecedented 59 single-day screenings.
  • The Yokohama-based sequel officially overtakes the Mugen Train milestone to become Japan's new theatrical dominance leader.
  • Backed by a multimillion-dollar legacy, the 29th film solidifies the franchise's status as an anime box office titan.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has long been the gold standard for anime box office dominance, but a beloved '90s classic just left it in the rearview mirror. When Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway premieres in Japan tomorrow, April 10, 2026, it will completely take over the T-Joy Yokohama theater with a mind-boggling 59 screenings in a single day. This massive opening lineup completely shatters the previous single-venue record of 42 screenings set by Ufotable's Mugen Train back in 2020.

According to Oricon, the schedule at T-Joy Yokohama is totally unprecedented for an anime feature. To hit that magic number of 59, the venue has packed its opening day with an early midnight premiere, 50 traditional theater showings, and 8 premium Dolby Cinema presentations. But the theatrical dominance isn't just limited to Yokohama.

Over at Toho Cinemas Shinjuku, the exact theater where Demon Slayer set its original opening day milestone, the new Conan film has snagged 44 screenings for its debut. That officially gives the iconic sleuth two more showings than Mugen Train received on its opening day six years ago.

The sheer volume of screenings at T-Joy Yokohama isn't just a flex; it's a localized celebration of the movie's setting. Directed by Takahiro Hasui, who fans might recognize from his work on Mob Psycho II, this  29th franchise installment drops Conan and his friends right into the Yokohama area for the Kanagawa Motorcycle Festival.

Detective Conan’s Multimillion-Dollar Box Office Legacy

The plot kicks into high gear when a mysterious, out-of-control black motorcycle causes chaos, sparking a high-speed chase with Chihara Hagiwara—a Kanagawa traffic police officer known locally as "The Goddess of Wind." Because the action happens right in their backyard, theater organizers wanted to give local fans every possible chance to see the hometown mystery on the big screen.

This kind of overwhelming theatrical confidence makes perfect sense when you look at the franchise's recent box office history. The previous movie, Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback, hit Japanese theaters in April 2025 and was a massive financial success. By early 2026, the film had pulled in around ¥14.74 billion, which is roughly $92.8 million USD, as per CBR.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle took the ultimate 2025 crown with an eye-watering ¥39.14B ($246.9M), but Conan's haul proved it comfortably belongs in the multimillion-dollar box office club alongside other heavy hitters like Chainsaw Man: The Movie - Reze Arc and Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution.

While Western audiences might occasionally overlook Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed), its enduring popularity in Japan is undeniable. Since the anime kicked off in 1996, TMS Entertainment has produced over 1,000 episodes and delivered at least one feature-length movie almost every single year since 1997.

The story follows teenage mystery prodigy Shinichi Kudo, who adopts the alias Conan Edogawa after the shadowy Black Organization transforms him into a child, continuing his detective work alongside his girlfriend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogouro. There isn't a North American theatrical release date for Fallen Angel of the Highway just yet, but fans wanting to catch up on the hype can stream the original series on Netflix and Crunchyroll while they wait.
