Highlights

  • Cineby will permanently shut down on Aug 26, 2026, after months of operation.
  • The closure follows growing copyright enforcement across multiple countries.
  • Cineby joins several major piracy sites that have shut down in 2026.

Cineby, one of the internet's largest piracy streaming platforms, will permanently shut down on Aug 26, 2026, after recording more than 160M visits in the previous month. Its operators will also close sister services Cineplay and Fmovies+, take down their servers, and delete user accounts.

The operators have not disclosed why they are leaving. Their notice says, “the time has come to stop,” following a year of escalating copyright enforcement across multiple jurisdictions.

Cineby Shutdown Follows Several Piracy Closures

Cineby hosted thousands of unlicensed movies and TV shows, including anime such as Bleach, One Piece, Re − Starting Life in Another World, Mushoku Tensei, and Goodbye, Lara. The Motion Picture Association had previously identified it as a notorious piracy operation in its submission to the U.S. Trade Representative.

Its legal pressure intensified in 2026, with Cineby included in a U.K. omnibus blocking order in May 2026 and a Canadian Federal Court order covering potential successor domains. In July 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered four associated Cineby addresses blocked in India, while the site's .at domain remained accessible when the shutdown was announced.

The broader piracy ecosystem has also lost several prominent platforms in 2026:

  • March 13: HiAnime announced its shutdown after more than 150M monthly visits.
  • May 10: AnimeKai ceased operations after infrastructure problems linked to a data-center fire, according to reports.
  • June: AnimeFLV stopped serving video, after operating for about 15 years and drawing more than 70M visitors in June.
  • July: AniGo went offline following a court-ordered domain suspension connected to an earlier case.
  • Aug 26: Cineby is scheduled to become the latest major platform to disappear.

Why Cineby's Exit May Still Not End Piracy

Cineby's operators reportedly relied heavily on third-party video embeds, leaving underlying content infrastructure intact. The shutdown, therefore, removes a major destination, but not necessarily the wider network

That is why recent U.K. and Canadian blocking measures also account for successor domains. The coming Cineby shutdown will offer another test of whether these broader measures can prevent replacement piracy platforms from quickly filling the gap.
