  • The University of Silicon Valley launched the Max Achievement Scholarship, awarding up to $15,000 yearly for rare, verified gaming feats.

If you’ve ever spent hours grinding on Elden Ring or Final Fantasy XIV only to be told that playing games is a waste of time or that will never amount to anything in life, you now have something to show for, to the critics. Thanks to a viral new academic program, your gaming prowess could help pay for your college degree. The University of Silicon Valley (USV) recently launched the Max Achievement Scholarship, a groundbreaking merit-based financial aid initiative targeting collegiate gamers. The university is formally offering institutional rewards "through the completion of rare and demanding achievements in digital gaming environments".

Unlike traditional collegiate esports programs that strictly recruit for competitive, multiplayer team titles like League of Legends or Valorant, USV’s new scholarship heavily emphasizes individual dedication, trophy hunting, and clearing punishing single-player or cooperative content. To secure the scholarship, applicants must provide verifiable proof that an achievement was personally earned via official profiles, platform APIs, or unedited screenshots from networks like Steam, PSN, or RuneMetrics.

The Funding Structure: Mastery Tier & Legendary Tier

The funding structure depends directly on the rarity of the achievements you’ve earned, split across two distinct accomplishment tiers:

Mastery Tier: Offers up to $2,500 per term ($7,500 annually across three academic terms) for completionist challenges with a global completion rate generally between 1% and 5%. Examples include clearing all role quests and 12 extreme trials in Final Fantasy XIV, or earning the Quest Cape in Old School RuneScape 3, or earning a Platinum Trophy in Elden Ring.

Legendary Tier: Offers up to $5,000 per term ($15,000 annually) for elite feats requiring over 500 hours of focus and holding a global completion rate under 1%. Qualifying feats include reaching the "Dead God" 100% completion mark in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, earning the Max Cape in RuneScape, or beating the ultimate boss on Ascension 20 with all four characters in Slay the Spire.

Massive MMOs, Punishing Roguelikes & Precision Platformers

As for the games included on the official roster, there’s a wide variety ranging from massive MMOs and punishing roguelikes to precision platformers. Recognized challenges include getting all combat, gatherer, and crafter jobs up to level 100 in Final Fantasy XIV, collecting all Golden Strawberries in Celeste, or earning all achievements across the mainline Dark Souls trilogy. There are even niche titles like Noita, Returnal, and Ghostrunner, proving this program isn't being run by someone doing their best impression of the "how do you do, fellow kids" meme.

For gamers whose favorite games aren't explicitly listed, USV provides a Custom Achievement Petition. Players can submit unlisted titles provided they supply official platform data showing a global completion rate under 5%, accompanied by a short essay detailing the precise cognitive skills required to clear the checklist, as reported by The Gamer.

University officials have argued that the educational logic behind the program is sound. School administrators view high-level gaming as direct evidence of long-term commitment, disciplined practice, systems thinking, and creative problem-solving—traits that translate perfectly into demanding degree paths like computer science, engineering, game design, and artificial intelligence.

You do have to write an essay to go along with proof of your in-game feats, and maintain a 3.0 GPA once enrolled, but if you're aiming to attend the University of Silicon Valley, your gaming prowess could grab you upto $15,000 annually.
