Highlights

  • Xbox is testing a "Buy Now, Pay Later" program with PayPal and Klarna for games and hardware.
  • This feature supports new business models for the upcoming Project Helix console.
  • Players may soon be able to split costs for Xbox consoles and Game Pass into flexible installments.

Xbox appears to be quietly preparing a “Buy Now, Pay Later” payment program for its hardware and software products, teaming up with major payment processors like PayPal and Klarna to bring flexible financing directly to gamers. Unearthed through recently datamined backend code from the official Xbox website, this discovery points towards a potential shift in how Microsoft handles storefront purchases. If officially rolled out, this option will give players a streamlined way to split the hefty cost of consoles, games, and subscriptions over several weeks or months rather than swallowing a massive upfront charge.

Insider-Gaming reported on details found by a dataminer on X (formerly Twitter) known as @redphx, who discovered the program on June 15, 2026. According to the leak, the Xbox checkout interface will eventually prompt users to "buy what you love and pay later" by offering two distinct payment routes.

Customers who select PayPal will have the option to make four interest-free bi-weekly payments, or they can choose an extended installment plan that spreads the balance out over a period of up to 24 months. Alternatively, those who check out with Klarna can split their purchase into three separate payments. The first Klarna installment would be due immediately at the time of purchase, followed by two additional payments billed every 30 days.

The obvious guess is that a program like this would be structured mostly for upcoming Xbox hardware, though, based on what was found in the backend, there is no indication it would be limited to just consoles. It could very well cover everything from Xbox Series X/S hardware to game downloads, DLC, and Game Pass subscriptions.

A Financial Solution for Project Helix?

This leak seemingly reveals a core element of the "radically different business models" that Xbox chief executive officer Asha Sharma has been discussing lately. In her journey to find a way for players to afford the next generation of Xbox consoles, like Project Helix, reliable financing options are becoming a necessity to combat rising industry component costs, as reported by Wccftech.

It is worth noting that Xbox has not announced an official payment program or confirmed this feature just yet. Buy now, pay later services have surged across e-commerce, and Microsoft already integrated PayPal Pay Later into the broader Microsoft Store in regions like the U.S., U.K., Australia, and parts of Europe back in July 2023. Bringing it directly to the Xbox ecosystem makes sense, but critics always caution that datamined code can sometimes represent test modules that never see the light of day.

Furthermore, though payment plans provide a lifeline for players unable to afford the full price of what will likely be an incredibly expensive next-generation console upfront, they come with risks. Depending on the terms of long-term financing, these installments can eventually become more expensive than simply paying the initial lump sum.

It is certainly not the cleanest solution, but realistically, nothing is when we are talking about ways for Xbox to get out of the financial hole it has built for itself over the last decade. As Microsoft pushes forward into the next console generation, we are likely going to see Sharma and her new regime try a lot of things the previous regime wasn't trying, right alongside a few old classics, like mass layoffs and shutting down award-winning studios.
